I just can't agree with you on this.

Believe me, most people (maybe not you I guess, but most people) will be a much better goaltender, be able to surprise more shooters and make it to a much higher level of hockey with more skills and capabilities.
A diving poke check is a great way to catch a shooter off guard, beat a guy you are racing to the puck, clear a rebound, etc., when used "selectively and appropriately".
I don't stack the pads much any more, but it is a great desperation move and two pads stacked offers twice the coverage than stretching out one leg to make a desparation save.
