Are you playing on sport court, wood, or smooth concrete?
No matter what surface, it sounds like you are not taking enough weight off of your lead leg. For shuffles i slightly lift my knee and push my leg over. On sport court you can eventually learn how to do about a 6" shift sliding on the cowlings of your skates. On a wood court I have to lift my knee higher and my entire lower leg except for the ankle.
