For me, it was always hockey and bicycle racing (road). Nothing gets your heart, lungs and legs in shape like bike racing! I played baseball as a kid (mostly pitcher) that helped with the mental aspects of being in the pressure position. Played a lot of badminton and table tennis in college too.

My son really only played hockey until this past year. He is a natural athlete that seems to be good at whatever sport he tries, but hockey was it. Entering high school this past year, he took up lacrosse. Wanted to be a middie, but the school knew he was a hockey goalie and kind of forced him to be the goalie. Just this past week he was awarded the "MVP- Defense" trophy at the season end banquet.

Taking time off from goaltending on ice (only once a week for the duration of the lacrosse season, instead three or four times a week) and focusing on netminding on the lacrosse team, seems to have really helped him in terms of upper body strength and speed, and with all the running (he often would run the ball up all the way to mid-field) he is in better overall condition too.
