OK, WCW wanted someone to compete with Steve Austin for the ratings, so they needed someone. They decided to go with a destroyer, so they made a casting and since Goldberg had some physical similarities with Austin, they took him to play that role. Also, Goldberg just can't work a match, so beating people in a squash was easy for him. They gave him a Austin mixed with Shamrock gimmick because both were hot back then.

I have to admit he did a good job doing it, but he had no dept and it shows when he went with the WWE. Austin was a tremendous wrestler, one of the best. His character was demanding more brawling, but when wrestling was necessary, he did a GREAT job.

Well, Goldberg played the character pretty well, he was marketed really well too, the only good marketing WCW did (for many reasons, even if they were really popular, the NWO was a failure). That worked and Goldberg made millions out of it. Great gimmick, great marketing, great run but since the wrestler has no wrestling dept, once the hype is gone, you're out. That was the difference between Goldberg and Austin, and even The Rock. The Rock and Austin were great wrestlers, so when the hype was gone, they were able to back it up with in-ring talent to stay on top forever.

Does it answer your question?
