Think of the 4.8 as having everything a higher model may have but with several reductions in quality and performance. If you're playing on ice I would suggest (from personal experience) that you get something higher like a 7.8 or similar mid-range quality gear in another brand. If you're playing roller or ball then the 4.8's should be fine because they slide decently well without modifications.

My main issue wiht the 4.8's when it comes to ice is that it didn't slide well for and a lot of ice gathered on the knee landing. Plus it doesn't feel as solid as something a bit higher would...You can look into an RBK 8k or Vaughn Epic 8600 possibly, those go for like $500-ish.

And like many will say, try looking into used gear. I just got a pair of lightly used Koho 580's (a pro-level pad) for the same price I got my itech 4.8 for. A great deal can be hard to find just gotta look hard and long enough.
