That's because Saturday night is party night, and the thing most people in Canada want to do at a party (house or bar) is WATCH HOCKEY!! Nothing more Canadian than drinking your ass off and screaming at the TV on a saturday night.
My team usually plays on Saturday nights. It was a majority decision to pick saturday to book our home ice (we rent our own and submit it to the league for use in the schedule), because Saturday night means hockey! After the game, it's mad scramble to get changed/cleaned up and race to the bar so we can catch the last period or two of the west coast game on the giant screen while hoisting a couple of post-game pints.
TV ratings for hockey in Canada are strong any day of the week, but the party=hockey connection means saturday will always be THE hockey night (in Canada).
