When I started butterfly I just had a hard time remembering to get my arms in so I just practiced a lot with the mind set of "head up, hands out, stick down, ram the elbows into the ribs" and I just kept saying that in my head whenever I was out by myself, with 1-2 shooters or at scrub etc.

And I would agree that a shorter paddle would be beneficial because even if you compensate by holding the stick on an angle so that it deflects pucks up into your chest, you will still need to be tight with your stick flat on the ice for 5 hole shots.
