Hey A_G, a couple of questions, do you play puck or ball and what surface ?
I find that with a puck on sport court or similar type surface if I am getting beat 2-0 I am usually getting too aggressive going to the puck carrier and trying to force the play. I try and give a little more room to the shooter and maybe even give some of the net to try and bait him into shooting (with the full intent of being able to cover the hole I have given him).
For myself I have found that if I can stay up on my skates through the entire scenario my chances of making the save are much improved. For that reason I really like to use what I think of as a 'pad shuffle', I kick out sideways with the leg I want to move until the wheels on my blades are barely touching the surface and use the inner pad to 'slide' across on, when I get to where I want to close the 5hole I turn my skate back under the pad and follow with the trailing leg to center back up to the puck. It took some time to figure out the balance etc. but with the leg pads I am using (Vaughn RollerVision) it works well. The lower inner/outer part of the pads are quite stiff and the leather has held up quite well so far.
