Private Lesson With NHL Goaltender Jason Bacashihua

Below is some footage of NHL goaltender Jason Bacashihua of the Colorado Avalanche doing a private lessons a few years back with his personal goalie coach and the Director of Bandits, Stan Matwijiw. This footage was taken when Jason was playing with the St. Louis Blues.

A few key points to pay attention to with Jason's movement and mechanics:

1. His focus on watching the puck from the shooters stick all the way into his body and all the way out and also tracking the location of the rebound.

2. His explosive movement off the post and also his movement from point "A" to point "B" using the Hop Step while in his crease and in the white ice.

3. His patience holding his white ice when shots are coming from an in tight position.

4. His focus on "checking his mirrors" when the puck is behind the goal line and a shooter is in the low or high slot waiting to receive a pass.

Are you advocating using the hop step as an alternative to t-pushing across the crease? Or is this merely Jason's way of getting across? To me it looks awkward and cumbresome...then again I'm no pro....just how it seems to me.

We teach both shuffles and T-pushes but we also teach a 3rd alternative movement to our students called the Hop Step which can be seen in the video clips above.

At Bandits, we feel that the hop step is quicker and more effective then a T-push or a shuffle in certain situations. Goaltending is a game that’s consistently evolving. Limiting oneself to certain mechanical movements while developing as a goaltender closes the book on being a student of the game!

I'm going to post an article on the Hop Step in a few minutes.

Cool vids but watching the glove positioning hurts. Why keep your glove in facing your blocker when it can be out and facing the shooter taking away space to shoot at???

Completely know where you're going with your thought process. However Cash's glove hand is actually one of his strong points. Although it might not be fundamentally correct in it's positioning it's apart of his overall style of play. I think he leaves his glove there to force shooters to look to his glove side to shoot.

I don't have that kind of glove hand so I don't have the ability to force the shooters there AND stop them (I can do the former it just doesn't end up well ) If it works I guess, works better for him than it will for 99.9% of us if it got him that far

I know Luongo keeps his glove and blocker down next to his body so that his only movement he needs to do it up, I was going to say that the goalie does the same thing (so that he only has one movement to do; out). Just some thoughts ..

I really like these vids though, the drills done here are superb, and I found that the reaction to various situations are different from what I have been attempting (and failing), so I will definitely be trying them out and implement them in my game if it feels good.

Foodsample how are you? I am the owner/director of Bandits Goalie School and have been Jason Bacashihua's personal goalie coach for 10 years and Chris Osgood's for 4 years now (Just thought I'd introduce myself).

With that being said... Thank you for your comments on the drills I am performing with Jason. If you ever have any questions that I might be able to help you with please don't hesitate to e-mail/write us.
Understand that every goalie is unique and what works for one may not work for another! Case in point is Jason (Cash) in this video, I agree with everyone's comments on Jason's glove position and have often joke with him about how "poor" it is! BUT!! His glove hand is UNBELIEVABLE so "if its not broke don't fix it"!!! Does that make sense?

I would never "suggest" to anyone of my students to carry/hold their glove in this position but if something works for you especially the level Cash plays at, then STICK WITH IT!!

Take care and thanks again for your comments.

LOL is right. Keep our head up next Wednesday!

Did the glove and blocker feel any better yesterday? The set up looks very nice...minus your HB mask!
