8 Shot Drill - Keep It Sharp 2008 Clinic

Below is a short clip of one of the many drills we run at our camps. This drill incorporates two cross ice pass with a shot, a walk in with a shot, three pass from behind the net, a walk out screen with a shot and finally a breakaway from the other side of the ice.

I have a question. Is the goalie aware ahead of time what the sequence will be? Looks like a good drill, as it mixes things up. It would work even better if your shooters were accomplished enough to randomize it. (Maybe 2 of the eight? Then the tender would know the drill, but not exactly when it's coming. Reactions would have to be heightened over mechanics)

Just a thought.

Great observation however you have to take into considerations that this drill is designed for goalies from the age of 9-16 years of age. With that being said, we're trying give the student the ability to use the skills needed to make the different saves and at the same time help them develop "Muscle Memory". Does that make sense?

Please don't get me wrong, if a student begins to "Fall into the drill" (CHEAT) then the shooters DO have the green light to improvise and make the point that "Cheaters never prosper"!!
Thanks again for the question/observation, feel free to ask or suggest anytime.

The age group does have bearing. I failed to look at that. I also understand the teaching of muscle memory. But It would be good for the kids to start understanding at an early age that a play doesn't always develop in a real game situation as it would in a drill.

Teach the mind at the same time as the body? Not much variance to the drill, and it would only work as well as the goalie and shooters performing.

As I said, just a thought. I'd hate to see any kid demoralized, but the goal is to make them better all around, correct? If this is a group setting, older kids would benefit more than the 9 year olds, and it would apply to them even more. (Remember when you were 14 or 15 and how impressionable you were? )

I know I was, and not doing what I was told was the rebellious norm. I still wanted to be good, though. For a lot of the teens I see, an unorthodox act on your part will encourage a response to try even harder.

It's a balance, I know!
