What makes a moderator?

I've been wondering this for quite some time, and I fiuger this is the forum to ask. How were Kevin and Bedris selected as moderators?

Not trying to start anything, and I'm not going to reply to any childish remarks, because I really would like to know what made these two stand out to be selected.

My mistake in saying Kevin and Bedris. It's Dave and Bedris, not Kevin. My apologies for the confusion.

Dave explained how he was selected in a Private Message, which is appreciated. I guess I was looking for an explanation from Brett or Paul.

Did Brett get fired, or is it just my imagination? He doesn't seem to be around much.

I became a mod when Brett was busy and I volunteered to move all the Equipment Review threads into their new forum. He gave me moderator privaleges so I could move threads, and I guess he forgot to remove them once I was done!

Shhhhhh..

p.s. He didn't actually forget to take away my privelages, Paul just keeps me around to move threads, delete threads, etc.

Here comes what might be a little "bridge burning", but I'll say it anyway because I'm not the kind of person to pull punches and I'm also one that isn't afraid to express opinions of a group that others may not be willing to voice:

I guess my question was posed because I feel that with a position of Moderator and the "powers" that comes with it also comes a certain expectation of a level of behavior more appropriate to the position, IM not-so HO. A Moderator should exemplify the behavior we would like to see members exhibit, and if that included belittling posts, flaming, and making snide remarks.....

I think you see where I'm going with this.

If I'm out of line with my question and/or thoughts....oh well. Delete the thread...after all, you've got that power, right?

Of course we have the power to delete threads. But where would it stop? Would we delete threads or posts just because we didnt like someone? acts like that would bring down the BB and turn it into a dictatorship with full censorship of the people on the board.

Now im speaking from a personal stand point here, I dont act all profesional and talk all formal and view people from above because im NOT someone from above. I read the posts I think look interesting, stay away from others, move threads when need be and that's about it. Im a "normal" member on the board, thats how i view myself and thats how I want others to view me. I wont come down on someone, or delete their post if they say something that I dont agree on. NOW if a topic starts using derogitory slang, and other things that are deemed socially unnaceptable I would probably either delete such thread or edit out the naughty stuff.

I do see where you are coming from, as in the equipment forum where a nice toasty BBQ got started between a moderator and a poster on the BB. Things like that -should- be avoided by everyone, especially moderators. I think once someone accepts the privilages "assigned" to them as a moderator I believe deep down inside they should know not to participate in such threads (by participate I mean "add to the flames") I know I expect my self to act better, and more mature than the other members, and im sure most members knowing that im a moderator would expect me to act mature also.

Usually though I just sit in my corner of the BB and silently read threads and make sure all is happy in Goaliestore BB land. Speaking up when I feel I should and other times just letting the content flow. I do my job and silently move threads that are out of place and everyone is happy. Or one would think.

Oh, and what bridge do you want to burn down? >:D Lemmie go grab my matches >:D

Pink, you should have just flat out said it. You know I'm all for speaking one's mind!

The point is I'm a normal member and any moderating decisions I make are completely objective. No subjectivity is involved.

In other wrods, if a thread is clearly in the wrong forum, I will move it. If someone posts inappropriate images I will remove the link or remove the threads. I am not the one who decides when a certain member is "acting up." That is totally outside my realm.

I certainly do NOT push my own personal agenda using my moderating privaleges. I consider myself more of a street cleaner than an actual mod, and that's why I have no reserves about acting as I normally would towards any members.

HOWEVER, I do respect you enough that, if you really feel strongly about this, I will telephone Paul and have him relay a message to Brett to have my privaleges revoked. Perhaps he can select another member to perform my clean up duties.

To be completely honest, the reason I volunteered to do this was to help all of YOU!!! I'm not sure how many of you realize how big of a pain in the ass it was to sort through every single Equipment Forum thread since 1999 and determine which was a review and which was a general inquiry. I spent about 7 or 8 hours of my own time to help better organize this bulletin board, with no pay or compensation in return.

Just keep that in mind before you declare me the villain.

Both of you guys p*ss me off, but I like you anyway. I'm not afraid that either of you would abuse your power, no matter how heated things get. You're both responsible, intelligent adults, and I don't see you screwing with someone's posts just becaise you don't agree with someone or because they're critical of you. As far as I'm concerned, you've both done a bang-on job.

Not doubting the work you or Dave do as moderators, and not declaring you a villain. In fact, the performance level of the moderation function was never in question. What was in question was the attitude displayed while posting.

Lead by example.....just think about that for a while.

Anyone else think Beddy in this thread sounds like Eddie Murphy in Coming to America where he denounces his throne?!?!?

No?! Ok, I'll go now.
