Throat shields shattering, I've never seen. But they can (and do) snap in half on impact.

I have seen an Itech face mask shatter too. A slapshot from the top of the circle went right through the mask leaving a mess of spiderweb shards imbedded in the guys face. It was really ugly.

I remember last year in a Wings game, Osgood's throat shield got split in 2.

There are several reasons a dangler won't shatter. First of all, as mentionend lexan is somewhat pliable this absorbs energy from the shot. Second since it does hang from your mask, it moves when it gets hit, absorbing some more of the energy.
I watched the game where Osgood's (The Wizard)guard broke. It was a hard shot, and the guard absorbed all of the energy from the shot as it deflected. However, the puck WAS deflected, and Ozzie played the rest of the game un injured.
On the other hand Norm Maracle, who NEVER wore one, did take a throat shot, and decided to update his equipment :-)

I started playing goalie with a dangler, but in the last few months, I decided to use a collar because I was sick of the clanking and impeding of my vision by the stupid dangler. WELLLLLL, last night, AFTER the game, I was letting some people shoot on me...and somebody done shot me in the collar...The puck's edge managed to catch the seam of the Vaughn collar where the bib meets the actual collar...seams do not have padding...pucks hurt. I am hurting...

lexan shields absorb the impact completely, just get a loud clank sound. Guards stop most of the impact but it still puts pressure on the throat. I don't like the feel of collars so the shield is my choice. If you play ball hockey collars are ok, but for ice i'd go with lexan. take your shield if you can bend it some, it won't shatter, if it's rock hard those shatter. And be smart if it's got a crack working, replace it.

I wear the lexan and the kevlar 'bib', In case the puck sneaks under the lexan. I fell much more confident playing this way.

Kuzma,

If you want the reason that the Lexan will survive better than the glass that sits on top of the boards, I will give it to you. As a materials engineer (almost) it has to due strictly with fracture mechanics. If you want I can haul out all of the math and explain it further. Also, the flopiness in the strings diverts some of the kinetic energy of the puck away from the throat by making the Lexan move.

Go spend the $35 and buy the thing. Not breathing would suck.

Those that use the Lexan shields, what do you use to attach it? String, cord, zip ties?

I just use string. Make a "square knot" and you shouldn't have any problem with them coming loose. If you want to make sure it still won't, saturate the knot with super-glue.

I had a zip tie on once and it lasted all of 15 minutes.

Just check your knots before the game and between periods. (Does that count as a ritual?)
