I wear a Heaton Clava Collar and Heaton mask, on which the chin section reaches farther down than on other masks. I don't use a dangly. So unless I look up, my throat is covered. In the two years I've had that mask, I have not been hit in the throat.

The other day my BF, a newbie to goaltending, got a puck to his throat during one of those scraps in front of the net. He was startled, but okay.

Maybe it's time to investigate getting danglies.

For anybody who uses a helmet/cage , there is an alternative to the clear lexan flopper. I think one of the rangers goalies used to wear a small coloured plastic flopper that snaps onto the cage. Several of my friends had them and most liked them. Think Itech made them, but not sure if they are still avaliable or not.

I have the Itech protector that snaps on the cage. I bought it after I took a shot in the throat in roller hockey. It works well and attaches with clips so it does not dangle but is part of the cage. I am not sure how those clips would hold up to a ice puck do to the extra weight. I just upgraded to a mask and after reading this post I am gonna see if I can attach the throat protector to it.
Later,
Dog

doesn't the snap on type have a curl outward mold to it so you don't impale your chest with it? i've seen goalies wearing these, and i would guess that they protect on the shots, but it looks like a stick could get under there. i like the dangly, but i know that one took a shot and cracked right down the middle leaving two scratches on the sides of this guys neck. scared the heck out of him, but he still uses it.

Bigdog,
The guys that I know that used the snap on shield all used them in ice hockey, and they all handled the pucks okay.

If you need a reason to wear a shield, check out the press on the habs flyers game today. I know McCleary is a forward, but playing goal without a neck shield would increase the odds of that happening. Good luck Trent.

Hey goaliegrl,You really need some sort of neck protection, even with balls, the masks leave your neck open too, just not as much as helmets. If you only use balls and not pucks, you can get an itech zytel mask they are cheap but you'd still want to get neck protection. I use a franklin mask for street of all things 30$ never had a problem. 1.You can get a collar if you like things close around your neck. 2.A lexan shield, tie it on with shoe laces in a square knot, mine has lasted for 2 years w/pucks, no cracks, just pull the knots tight before each game and they won't come out. If you give it enough slack you won't even know it's there. 3.Itech does make a plastic scoop that snaps to the bottom of your cage, but i still think a stick could slide up under it. Everybody is writing they saw a guy's lexan shield shatter(once), ask the guy if it had a nick from a skate or stick, i get hit at least 3 times a practice with pucks and it's fine, mine is a bauer, it's flexible, but i had to drill a 3rd hole in the middle and it hasn't affected it at all. I used to have the itech, it's not lexan, it doesn't flex at all, it's narrower, and really digs into your clavical when the pucks hit it, it's also heavier. If you get one i can email instructions on how it should be attached with the strings. I've been hit in the adams apple with a street puck, it slid up my chest, luckily it hit my chin cup a little to soften the blow, scared me, had to get a shield after that. good luck :-)

That would actually be a really good idea! As far as I know, there isn't anything about PM anywhere I've looked...

Naah... Yes, I was startled, but that was only because I hadn't received any shots on the lower part of my mask (Koho Revolution, if I'm not mistaken...). This mask has the low neck covering, and that in combination with a Heaton Clava Collar, I feel very well protected. Just as a side note, though, when I bought my helmet from a Yahoo auction, a dangler was actually on the helmet, but I decided that, after I wore the helmet with the dangler, I did not have very much radius in being able to turn my head (left and right & down). I just felt that it would interfere too much with my game to where I would just not enjoy playing.
P.S.-After I got hit near the throat, I was back tending the net 3 minutes later, doing just fine.

So this has happend to me twice in the last three years. Taking a shot off the lexan and having the nylon, or skate lace break on one side of the dangler. Anybody have experience with that and find something that is stronger? It happend last night for the second time and I ended up playing the last 15 mins w/o it. I hate not having it.

The worst thing about them is rebounds off the lexan, it clunks and what would have been a nice clean chest save is now a bad and hard to control rebound. I messed with mine forever to get the right lie and feel, but I still don't like looking through and it distracts me. But, I have seen the Malarchuk video, so I deal with it.

1) This thread started 10 years ago!

2) Have you tried waxed skate lace and "looped" them into each other

3) I have a backup vaughn throat collar in my bag. You can always use your timeout and unless your league is very strict, the refs and other players probably won't mind the 2 minutes it takes to go to the locker room and put it on.

yup 10 years ago..
Tried the skate lace w/ loop and the stock nylon line/lace whatever they call it. two times in a 3 years isn't really bad considering I've worn one since the early 80's. I was just curious to see if i missed something..

kudos for doing a search. some people are quick to ream a guy for not searching...and obviously you searched.

i want to wear a dangler, but besides not being able to see anything straight down (where the juicy loose pucks reside)...i had a very bad experience with one. took a shot off the side of the helmet, dangler gets loose while play goes on and my head is half ****ed to the side because the damn dangler got under the side of my mask. it was towards the end of a close game and it was a nightmare. i'm pressing my head into it trying to get it straight or flicking at it with my catcher. meanwhile play is moving around my end. stupid thing ended up digging into the side of my face to the point it gave a burning sensation and nasty scratch. so got scored on by a weak shot. later i proceeded to smash the bleeping thing to pieces the second i got in the locker room. haven't worn one since which is surprising for me because i'm all for safety gear. if i played out i would wear a full college cage. i want to wear one, just i can't stand my neck being restricted.

yes in retrospect i should have done more to get ref's attention or a team mate or just dislodged the net. just felt like at the time it would come loose or the puck would clear any second...which didn't happen after all.
