I guess you're the new Nik? The board always needs one....
I'm a complete and total b-fly goalie, a la Carey Price; however, I've used the pad stack once or twice. Also, the diving pokecheck can be incredibly useful to have in your repertoire.

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away

It's evident that his game has not matured to the point where he can self-analyze and correct - that's cool. Lessons sometimes need to be learned the hard way, I know.
At some point, if he is to develop beyond a mediocre level, he will need to realize that you need multiple tools in the old toolbox and that the butterfly style game is very limiting in many respects. But that will take time, introspection and maturity so let's cut him some slack and see where his 'career' goes.
I'm hoping someday - perhaps years from now - he will eat some humble pie and post a respectful 'thank you' on this BB to all us 'old farts' who have already realized there is more than one way to skin a cat...

I rarely post anymore...but I have to this time. Even if you choose not to utilize the tools that are the poke check and the pad stack, they are still tools you should have in your tool box. I am with Wellsie and Keeks on this one 100%.
I have been fortunate to to work at a great goalie school for the past 7 years. It a school run by a well known man and has been attended by a lot of well known goalies. This school still teaches both of those things along with more common modern techniques. Any goalie that is unwilling to arm himself with the most tools possible to do the job is the goalie who will watching a faceoff at centre ice when the time comes that the tools he needs are missing.
I can also tell you this, of all the elite goalies I have seen (this includes actual elite goalies and goalies who believe in their own mind that they are elite), the ones who complain and say "well my goalie coach says this" or "I never use that" are the ones that never progress to the next level. Ever. Its simply an excuse to be lazy. These are the same goalies who end up saying "I was good enough to make it but it's all politics man". The ones who approach the game with an open and educated mind are often the ones you end up seeing on tv.
What do the old farts know though? Good luck with your high school career. We'll enjoy watching you not stack the pads in 2 years when you're playing against us all in beer league.

How about a sliding pad stack check?
And behind Gaborik, was Hasek's D. I'd rather take out Gaborik in a race with the D right behind him.

Ive seen a hell of a lot of goalies all around the world succeding without pad stacking.
I dont think it is neccasary to have if i want to progress. I mean no one has said, " you should have stacked the pads on that shot, youd have stopped it then." Just because a few pros use it effecticvely doesnt mean EVERY goalie does. I mean the goalies that do use it thats there style, hasek he makes the weirdest saves ever. I dont like Marty Broduers style but he stops one hell of a lot of shots.
So if a goalie can use it effectively, kudos.
why are you trying to convince a stubborn conservative norwegian, if i clearly dont want to use it? lol

It's not that you HAVE to use it, but you're saying that goalies who do use it are dinosaurs and they are "dying off". Nothing could be further from the truth. It's just another save selection than can come in handy at the right time, IF you know how to do it.

You dont think i analyze my abilties. i watch every game that is filmed of me and see what i couldve done better or what i did well then continue to do that. Then my dad and i go over it again and analyze it together, next i keep watching it were ever there is a computer (school library friends house etc.)Psh mediocre, because i dont use a pad stack, wow.
