Benign lipoma

After an ultra sound and an MRI the good news is this new addition to my body is not cancer. However it is a benign lipoma. Deep into my rib cage muscle. Anyone have one of these. One doctor says leave it and the other says have it cut out. Since it is deep into my rib cage muscle my biggest concern is strength issues. If anyone has had surgery on one of these your advice would be greatly appreciated.

my fiance had the exact same thing. She still has pain from it where it was removed. I would deffinantly have it removed, it can get to be pretty painful. Between the rib cage is not a good place to have a growing mass, one of the most painful things you can experience, get it removed because if it grows more (as hers did) its only going to hurt more and hinder your movement.

i unfortunately have a ton of these in various spots on my body; doesn't help that i'm a skinny guy so i don't have as much insulation to conceal them. i recall my doc saying that they can actually be pretty common.

the ones i have are mostly centered aroudn the torso, as small as the size of a pea or the biggest is about the diameter of a quarter.

none of them have ever caused me any pain though. doc basically said only reason to take them out is if they change size dramatically; only other reason would be for cosmetic purposes. not sure if i'd get mine taken out; i've had them this long, i have so many, plus i'm already married so the wife is stuck with all of my endearing disfigurements anyways

my $0.02 , good luck with whatever you do, glad you're cancer-free

benign is a GOOD word no doubt.

you need to get several opinions on this.

Though its benign, it might very well keep growing in that spot and become bigger. Obviously that might be a problem. Or....it could stay the same, Or....it could shrink (though not likely).

Definately get a really good, second opinion or a third or a fourth.

Yeah, I have a few small bumps around my body as well. My doctor said pretty much the same thing yours did.

I have one in my arm near my elbow. No big deal. Doesnt hurt, doesnt hinder any movement. Its just there. I am not going to have it removed until it becomes painfully obvious that I have a lump on my arm.

A very big +1 on that. Despite our differences, I would not wish the "C" on anyone.

Thanks guys. The second opinion seems to be the way to go. I just don't want this think to get so big that a surgery would cause muscle problems. The surgery though does sound like a painful deal since I use that arm for most everything I do. Anyways thanks again.

Dave
