Neoprene shorts - restricting
I'm still having some occasional groin/hip flexor soreness after my pulled groin over a year ago and also recently have a little soreness in the other groin. I wear compression shorts and a groin strap on the leg that I originally hurt and was thinking about getting some neoprene shorts instead of another strap for my other leg. I would like to know if the shorts restrict movement. My flexibility is important because I am not very big, so i don't want to waste my money if I can't move. Thanks for any input.

They have a little bit of a break-in period. My UA compression shorts felt horrible for a little while, but they finally loosened up enough to be somewhat comfy...

I wore STX lacrosse compression shorts for awhile and loved them. I no longer use them but have been noticing that my groin is more sore without the extra stability the shorts provided.
As leafer said though they take a few games to break in. I typically wear them around the house for a few days before I use them in games to break them in.

I have a pair of these that are probably over 10 yrs old now and are still in decent condition.
BIKE Athletic | Sports Medicine, Protective Equipment & Team Apparel
I've moved on to under armour because these used to be hard to find in Canada and even still I can only find them in white.
But they are still in my rotation so get used about once per week. I used to wear them for football and rugby as well as hockey and I love them.
Their compression properties are the best I've used and the only restrictions that arise are that it's difficult to scratch my balls.

3M makes some pads that help with that; strangely, they're over in the paint section of the hardware store.

They should be fine. The ones I've seen are just like the wetsuit shorts thickness of neoprene, and those don't restrict movement at all. Gives you more compression too. They'll be warmer than the UA/spandex stuff though.

These are a littly pricey. I tore my hip flexor last year and was off the ice for 30 days doing rehab for 4-5 hours a day. My physical therapist recommended these and I bought the rehab pair. They are THE BEST pair of compression shorts you can buy. Mine have the built in wrap so they have the compression and take place of using a wrap. I really like them and would recommend them to anyone who has had an injury; even those who haven't just for the prevention factor. You can PM me if you have any other questions about them.

Thanks for everyone's help. I saw a pair of neoprene workout shorts at Sports Authority yesterday, unfortunately they did not have my size. They were only $20, so i may give them a shot if I can find a medium somewhere. The hip feels pretty good today, but I have my shinny with the ex-Jr A players tonight, so I'll see how it feels in the morning. In the mean time, I'll try groin straps on both legs. Thanks again.

Before having to become reliant on specific shorts or other gear aids, I'm curious what kind of stretching routine do you employ?

I second the Bike compression shorts, they are far and away the best for injury prevention.

I incurred a 2nd degree groin pull in December 06, never really got better until I started using the stretching with the Stretch-a-Flex program (see pic). Once the groin healed, soreness moved to hip flexor. Hip seems to be getting better now, although I feel better with some support for my hips and groin when i play. I skate twice a week and have a 90 minute early morning practice. I also am working on stengthening my hips and legs with squats and adductor machines weekly. I stretch for at least 45 mins before playing and do one full lower body routine with the stretch-a-flex DVD (1 hr) on an off day in between playing. I did my squats yeaterday and feel great today, so I'm just looking to do everything I can to avoid another groin pull. When you're almost 39, you just don't heal like you used to...

Now I remember that thread, when I read it, as I recall most of it was about the Streetch-A-flex, and I honestly don't remember your routine, this connects the dots.
I'm going to go out on a limb here (someone will probably shoot me down), but I'm thinking that you spend more time streeetching than the majority of members here.

Like STLtender, I use the CORETECTION compression shorts (REHAB) and I like them a lot. Feels like you're in a sausage casing which can take some time to get used to - testicles especially - my physiotherapist recommended them, saying that they do what my abdominal muscles are supposed to do. I haven't noticed any lack of mobility while wearing them, but that might have more to do with my base-line lack of mobility.
They are pricey (CAN$200 for the REHAB model) but they allow me to keep playing.

LOL...I guess if you have no mobility, they won't be a problem...since I don't have size, I gotta be quick. I did see the coretection shorts, but I would really have to sneak those under the wife's radar...might try something similar off eBay

I use these:
Shock Doctor 275 Adult Power Hockey Jock w/ Power Carbon Flex Cup
I have had groin problems for most of my career. I find that these help the best of any compression short I have used. They are made of a very thick spandex/moisture wicking material, even thicker than UA's Coldgear base layers, whcih are thick. Also, there is a neoprene layer over the thighs about as thick as a wetsuit. The combination of the two materials and their thicknesses really works well at providing a great deal of support and keeping the muscle warm. The other brands are a thinner type of spandex or moisture wicking material. I have used the UA, Philly Express, Winnwell, Nike, and Itech compression jocks and these Shock doctors are significantly better.
Edit: I was wrong. I actually use these GREAT LOW PRICE
Shock Doctor Adult Power Hockey Jock w/ Flex Cup, but the ones above look like they might be better for goal since you won't need the attached cup and they seem to be tighter in the groin. That is assuming they are as thick and tight.
