Goaltender Stats Software

If you were to develop your own custom software to keep track of Goalie Statistics. What features would you need? What would you want?

These are mine:
Need:
Location of Shooter:
Type of Shot: (Wrist, Slap, Deflection,Onetimer, other)
Result of Shot: (Rebound, Covered, Goal, other)
Location of rebound:
Possession of Rebound: (Us, Them)
Goalie position: (Up, B'fly, Scramble, other)
Location of shot on net: (Blocker high, mid, low; Glove High, mid, low; 5 hole, etc...)
Team Strength: (PP, SH, 4 on 4, etc...)
Summary Report: (for between periods)

Want:
Chart both goalies: (Yours & Opponents)
Player # Shooting: (& Name)
Attach Video Clips to shots, or goals
Record players on ice at time of goals:
Shooter trends: (player X shoots blocker high 80% of time)

This is your chance to dream
Those of you on the BB that are Goalie Coaches, Would there be a report format that would help you when you are working with the goalies?

What a timely topic, I have been thinking a lot about this lately as things move into active 'scouting season'.

I think you touched on the most important items. One area you did not mention is dealing with puck control. When I was doing some stuff for Keeks/Leafs they were interested in puck possession stats. It was fairly simple: was puck possession maintained or was there a giveaway?

At the lower levels this might not be important, but I think that at Bantam and above this is a relevant statistic. I would like to see it expanded to include a category that evaluates whether or not the goalie attempted to play or stop the puck, as that is a common deficiency that I regularly see happening.

As I write this, I am actively trying to design a spreadsheet that will allow the tracking of each shot which will include the shot type, origin of shot in the zone, targeted area of entry at the net, save result/rebound control.

I am experimenting with Dragon Naturally Speaking to verbally dictate the information into the spreadsheet to allow me to keep up with the flow and speed of the game.

My initial thoughts are to divide the ice into segments that will represent the shot region. The net will also be divided into segments. Shot type will be categorized and the resultant rebound control will also be numerically evaluated. In theory I would be able to quickly dictate something like: "6421" which would correlate to a shot originated from zone 6, at zone 4 of the net, resulting in a rebound control of 2 and a shot type of 1.

Dictating by voice would allow me to multitask with video recording and shot evaluation, both of which are key aspects of services I now offer.

One last "wish list" item. If a program could be developed that would work on a tablet pc that would be the cats ass. I love my tablet for ease of use and input in select applications. If a program could be developed that would allow pen based input for such things as shot origin, type, location and rebounds it would be awesome. I know they exist for football programs and I have contacted vendors to try an adapt them to hockey but it is not a market they seem to want to expand into...

Let me know how you proceed, I might be interested in a beta product test down the road.

Wellsie

I am not sure who produced this, but about 5 years ago I saw a hockey dad using a piece of software on a PDA that allowed him to track shot stats.

Basically it was a picture of the ice surface on the PDA. He touched the screen with the stylus where the shot originated, touched a box for HOME or AWAY, and then touched a result box SAVE or GOAL. He mentioned that there were a lot of other features that allowed even more accurate tracking (ie number of shooter, type of shot, etc) but he was learning the software and was using in a basic mode.

That might have been Popa's system. I know a goalie dad whose kid had been going to Popa for years*, and he was telling me about Popa's PDA system where you could download and send the PDA info to Popa every month and he would analyze it and send back practice plans of what needed to be worked on, etc. I believe the system was set up to mark where on the ice the shot came from, where the shot "landed" on the goal/goalie, whether the goalie blocked it or a goal was scored, and even rebound information.

*This was before Popa went off the deep end and started standing people up for camps/clinics, etc. After years of faithful devotion from this goalie dad that I know, Popa stood them up at a clinic over Christmas break, and Popa's now on that dad's sh!t list.

Edit: I just found the info on Popa's website - it's called iGoalie : iGoalie™ - Handheld Goalie Tracking System

iGoalie™ will allow you to track 10 game blocks of the following info:

• the situation that led to any scoring chance.

• the shooter's location on all attempted shots.

• the goalie's location on all attempted shots.

• the shooter's location on all shots.

• the goalie's location on all saves.

• the goalie's location on all goals.

• the goalie's executed technique on any goal.

• the goalie's primary equipment used on any goal.

• the primary situation that led up to any goal.

• how often the goalie was in the right place at the right time.

• the location of the puck in relation to the net on any goal.

I'm working on some software right now that probably isn't as detailed as you want but would work for tracking shot location and things like that.

It is a program for the scorekeeper to use for goals, penalties, goalie changes, shots, etc. Then when the game is over the program uploads the data to the website where you can view stats from any game or by team/player. Similar to the NHL.com website.

It has kind of slid to my backburner but I'm guessing I'll start up on it again after I finishing buying my house and moving. Once I feel it is ready for testing in 6-12 months I'll start looking for rec leagues to try it out and let me know how they feel about it and what suggestions they have.

That empty box in the middle will show shots by period. All the info in this screenshot is made up (names, teams, etc)
