What other sports do you play that help with goaltending?

Other sports that affect your play as a goaltender?

Growing up playing soccer and baseball always helped with hockey.
Most of the time I was the goalie or catcher, but enjoyed when I could play'out' or the treasured second base.

Into high school I discovered badminton. My opponents always wondered how I could pick the birdie out of the air. I think it was because I imagined it was a puck.
The same ran true when I switched back to the ice and my imagination made those glove saves easy.

Now I'm a dad and Tae Kwon do has entered the scene. The stretching, large muscle exercises and yoga(yes, I did type yoga) have helped me through the morning after that double overtime oldtimer tournament.

So, I pose the question, what sports( other than hockey) do you play that help your game?

I think next year, I'm gonna try lacrosse.

A fellow second baseman.

Raquetball is really good, however, a lot of the pros seem to be benefitting from golf these days ... especially Lundqvist, Price, Huet, Brodeur, Giguere, etc...

Baseball pretty much made my glove and my puck tracking what it is. I always played third or shortstop, and had a pretty good glove there. That formed a lot of my reactions and anticipation.

I have done Tae Kwon Do for about 14 years now. That has done worlds of good for my flexibility and stamina.

The biggest helper I think though was cheerleading. I was involved in competitive cheerleading for 3 years. That was great for body control, agility, and flexibility.

For me, it was always hockey and bicycle racing (road). Nothing gets your heart, lungs and legs in shape like bike racing! I played baseball as a kid (mostly pitcher) that helped with the mental aspects of being in the pressure position. Played a lot of badminton and table tennis in college too.

My son really only played hockey until this past year. He is a natural athlete that seems to be good at whatever sport he tries, but hockey was it. Entering high school this past year, he took up lacrosse. Wanted to be a middie, but the school knew he was a hockey goalie and kind of forced him to be the goalie. Just this past week he was awarded the "MVP- Defense" trophy at the season end banquet.

Taking time off from goaltending on ice (only once a week for the duration of the lacrosse season, instead three or four times a week) and focusing on netminding on the lacrosse team, seems to have really helped him in terms of upper body strength and speed, and with all the running (he often would run the ball up all the way to mid-field) he is in better overall condition too.

I'm going to try to play in a hoop league this summer. Change of scenery and good foot work. Will also help with my vision as i usually play point cause i love to make the sweet dish to the middle

I'd play baseball, but all they have around here for my age is softball and i just can't stand it. Rather play the real thing. Soccer would be fun too.

Does b-boying count? Very physical, strength and cardio

I can't do too much or my kids will never see me home

Its surrprising, but golf helps me a lot, especially with focus and the mental game. Playing competitive golf, where every shot is the most important shot, is exactly like playing goal, and the mental toughness it builds is indispensible. It also helps hand-eye and overall core strength.

Tennis & yoga.

Tennis is a lot of quick side to side bursts and requires quick reaction time (granted playing a high level of tennis is kind of required for it to be beneficial.)

yoga i just started and besides hanging out with a room full of women, it has been an awesome stretch and core workout.

I play:
Soccer (since I was a toddler)
Frisbee
Squash
Tennis
Flag Football

I also golf and snowboard. Used to play baseball and basketball, but ran out of time for that many sports.
