Torn Between Positions
Alright let me just say that I have been playing goal since I was about 11. Before that like most I started off as a player forward. I didn't start playing goal by choice. I started to put on some weight and slowed down significantly. So they thought it would be wise that I played goal. (Take up more space I guess ) Anyways, Flash forward 8 years later to now. I was playing pick up hockey on Friday. There was only 9 players, but 3 goalies. A buddy of mine had some extra gear so I decide to skate out. (Minus some elbow pads). Right off the bat I felt way more comfortable. I got right up in the play and had great speed. By the end of the session I had 4 goals and around 2 assists. The goalies there were talented as well. Then on this morning I went to play pick-up and I didn't even want to play goal. It seamed that I had lost my passion for it almost over night. Now I'm just confused on what to do. I rather not play both. I rather just pick one and stick to it. I just feel like I've never stopped being a forward. Maybe I just need to skate out more then make my decision from there. Has something like this ever happened to anyone else?

Don't be apologetic, just go out and do what is the most fun. If playing goal isn't that exciting for you anymore, maybe its time to try out something else.

Well I know. I was just hoping that maybe someone had a similar experience. Did you ever get your helmet fixed? I got a chunk taken out of my sportmask pro custom. I just used some bondo to fill the hole and then used an enamel to paint it.
....sorry off topic

Do both.
I take care of my business in my regular league in net. But I also skate out in a lower league. If the pickup list is full I skate out. It's not as if I dont practice the scouts won't see me. We're past that point.

What i think you are experiencing is just the excitement of something new. Not that you were getting bored of goalie, but you just had fun that first time and it made you want to do it again.
For example last week i went frizbee golfing for the first time and loved it so i went the next three days, but havent really wanted to go anymore because its not new and exciting anymore.

Do what you enjoy. Life is too short to turn your hobbies into work.

Exactly your post hit the nail on the head.
I too tried Frisbee golf. I went for about a month. Even bought a set of frisbees. Its fun for awhile.
After skating out a few more times recently, Ive really decided that Im better off in the net. I may pick up some players gear when I have some extra cash. Just to maybe go out and play some pick-up. Playing Goal is just what I know. I thought scoring a goal was pretty fun. But I get way more enjoyment from making a huge glove save

Who says you can't play in goal and out? I played out on ice since I was 5, but also played goalie in competitive floor hockey or ball hockey continuously since I was 10 until I finally decided to play goal on ice when I turned 37. I still keep my player's equipment and play out a few times a year, although I should have started played goal on ice about 30 years ago instead of 2...just have fun

I play both. goal twice a week, out 2-3 times a week. I'm much better as a goalie than I am forward (no problem w/junior a as a goalie, as a forward i'm maybe high school varsity lol). but I am good enough to score goals and set up plays, and I can skate very well.
consequently, I have much more fun playing out than net. Do it every chance I can. wish i played out the whole time, but I've been in net since I was 7 (played out from 5-7 haha).

Do what you feel is right. I know that when my team has a fun practice or a "father/son" game I erally enjoy playing player. It is just fun, and you get a rush that you don't get when you play goalie. I'm not sure if your just feeling what I feel, but either way you will be playing hockey and having fun with it.

Wow.. I had the EXACT same problem cept I was a goalie through college. It is weird, I was going to start a thread on the exact same topic.
I sold all my gear not too long ago in anticipation of taking a few years off of goalie and buying all new gear later on. I had enough gear to skate out so I tried it once last week.
Not only did I have the most fun I've had in a long time, but to everyone's surpirse (including myself) I did amazingly well. I skated around many of the guys out there, made some great defensive plays, but overall I had so much fun..
I hurt my back in college; the main reason I stopped playing goalie. Skating out does not hurt at all and frankly, I had no desire to play goalie whatsoever afterwards. I was out of position a few times skating out, but then again it is beer league. most of the guys are drunk, thinking about drinking, hungover, or don't care about things like positioning, backchecking, etc.
I felt such a strong passion for skating out, yet at the same time I felt torn between playing goalie. I find myself continually lusting after the sweet gear people post here but also wanting to skate out at the same time..
What is the psychology behind this?

Umm... Envy? Actually if you listened to my fiance and ex-girlfriend they'd tell you it's an obsession with hobbies so you can buy new stuff. ADD maybe?
I've gone the other way. from playing out to net. I always wanted to play net and I was starting to get bored with the league/team I was skating out with. Who knows, maybe I'll get to a point where I'll want to get back to skating out. I'll just have to play a pickup out every now and then.

I think that one goalie on here said it perfect. It's the thrill of something new. I've skated out a few more times since on some borrowed gear. I enjoy it. However, I keep finding myself wanting to play between the pipes. It's always nice to try new things though. I can understand you wanting to play out because of a back problem. This way you can still enjoy the game and not be in so much pain.
