How to deal with an ***hole Teammate

Seems like every team has one. I just joined a second adult league team that was in need of a goalie. I'm not really there to make friends, I just want to play some hockey. Well - seems like every team i've ever been in in my 12 year career has a player who likes the say things like "don't screw up tonight" or "you should have stopped that shot" during warm-ups. I'm sure you all know what i'm talking about. Well my new team has this guy. He told me I should have taken full responsibility for the lost we had last night in BEER LEAGUE...Granted I played two strong periods and in the 3rd let in a couple softies, and my team fell apart. Now i'm the last guy to blame my team or a specific person for a loss (unless he is a referee haha), but how do you deal with this player? Do you respond? i generally keep my mouth shut, shake my head and get changed. Really starting to irritate me though.

Thanks for the input!

Find out if the other teammates also thinks hes a dick, get support from them making sure they have your back, then call him out in front of everyone making him look like the douchebag he is.

****ty, that kind of trash should not be going on in rec/beer league play. I'm not sure what I'd do, probably the same as you have just shake my head or laugh it off as the guy obviously isn't worth my time. If it keeps up though I'd definitely do what Bones was saying and talk to the other guys about him and maybe they can put him in check. You don't have to necessarily call him out, if they know him well enough they can and most likely will get him to shut up.

Variation on the Bones idea:

Get several of your teammates behind you, and take both skater and goalie gear to the next game, and show up early to be the first in the dressing room. Dress in your skater gear first thing, then when he gets there, tell him that since he knows so much about what a goalie should be doing, HE gets to mind the net for that game.

After he gets lit up like a Christmas tree, tell him that you'll let him skate out in the future, as long as he STFU.

i feel you pain bud, theres this one game i played this year we lost 1-0
we were out shout 59-16 and this a hole on my team has the balls to say ,one more save and we could of had 1 point for the tie. i then told him if your scored
a goal once in a while as are number 1 centre men we might win some games
needless to say the **** head only scored 5 goals in 35 games,
while i had the best save percentage in my league

I fortunately have never had this happen. But if it did, I would simply tell him or her whenever the #$%^ they have the nads to put on the pads, go right ahead and do a better job.

Until then, shut the hell up and leave the goalies alone.

I play in thousand oaks, ca

I generally have good teammates. It seems to be the trend however, the more inexperienced the player - the more likely to call out the goalie... Think next time this happens I'm going to speak up though - It's so easy to pick out a goalies mistakes, just look at the score board right? But when a defenseman misses an assignment or a forward whiffs on a shot, who remembers? Ahhhh the trials of being a goalie! Gotta love it!

thanks for the suggestions!

I don't put up with players being jackknobs to me because I don't do it to them. I'll confront assbutts in a civil manner and tell them I won't be spoken to like that. It's worked every time.

A few times, I've done the rabid madman routine that just scares the player. That one works, too, but I don't recommend it.

Did somebody say BEER?

Can't help but smirk at a few of the replies posted to this message.

So here are my two bits, as a washed up, has been net keeper who keeps dragging his sorry butt to the rink multiple times per week.

At the start of each game, prior to face off (as we gather in front of the net), I make to following statement "If they shoot, there is a good chance they will score, if they score, then its your fault". You would be surprised how many people laugh at the statement and realize that at the end of the day, its beer league!

If you do however need to be a little stronger then I suggest you call him out when a comment is made. I have been in this situation and feel it is best to say prior to a game.Just remind him that there are FIVE people that the ONE player went around, to score on YOU. Ask him if he would like to discuss it with the four other players as well?

Good luck and welcome to thick skin, it will work itself out. Just play your best and buy a round every so often.

-Rob

Unfortunately, there;s always one guy who still thinks he should be in the show. Next time he says something, you tell him if he does his job then you won't have to do yours.

I don't remember who said it but, anytime there's a shot on net or a scoring chance and d-man or forward has screwed up some how and its up to us to save their a$$.
