Edge Control in the Butterfly

Tonight I was working with a goalie coach on my movements. We were mainly practicing butterfly slides/pushes. He kept telling me over and over that I need to use my edges more while in the butterfly instead of just sliding on my pads. I am not sure what he means by this. I can do one knee pushes very easily as well as butterfly shuffles, so I am not sure what he wants me to do. The only thing I can think of is maybe changing direction more quickly.

Does anyone understand what he wants me to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

^^ second that ... I assume your paying for him to coach you right? I know I do, and I make sure to question every single thing he tells me. My coach and I have gotten much closer now I think, and he understands how I think .. and has incorporated that into how he works with me. Also I have a growing respect for him, since he knows what hes talking about and has proven it by getting into a D1 college next season.

No, I don't pay the guy. He was just someone who happened to be at the practice. I don't even know his name.

He prob means, your skate edges. The proper way to do a b-fly push is to use the toe of your skate to grip the ice and push. It'll give you more power in your pushes than just using your kness.

Actually I have heard that you dont use your toe but load the skate under you and dig in with you heal and push off. I have tried it and works better than the toe. This what a goalie coach told me and showed me on an ice session.

Ya, I should have said heel as well. I was told what ever works for you " toe or heel", is fine.

here is a link to view backside recovery: Vaughn Hockey - World Leader In Custom Goalie Equipment - Backside Leg Recovery Foot Placement

Called your back-side edge. This is why i like sharp skates 3/8 so i can use my edges while in the butterfly .

It's basically skating.

Learning how to skate.

Have you feet out like a penguin in starting positing and use the whole blade from heel toe.

There's no difference except that one knee is down.

That 's why you have to learn how to skate

go buy the book:

Laura Stamn Power Skating Book

Everything starts off with skating.

Overdrive blades are NOT the way to go to learn this. When in your butterfly, you don't want to push off your toe. You want to "load and gather" on the foot you're pushing off with. Meaning, load all your weight on to your foot, gather your other leg towards the leg you're pushing with (pretty much bring your knee to meet the other knee) and push off. You will go far. Now it's up to you to learn how to control it.

I "third" the no on OD blades. I used to have them but they don't really help much. especially when you need to use more of your heel at the start of the push. OD blades gave me bite without lifting leg but it would be very difficult to push off in my opinion. I have my blades sharpened at 5/8th and have no problem getting a good push.

You just have raise your knee of the driving leg up to your torso if you want a big push and make sure the passive leg's knee is slightly raised to reduce friction. It takes practice but if you keep practicing, it will become second nature.

Good luck!

Hey I respect your view on not using the OD blade. But I don't agree with using the heal to push. If you've skated, played hockey, or ever had goalie coaching. The power is in the toe of the foot, not the heal.

Hence the saying "back on their heals" you can't get proper power unless you're using your toes. Yes you can get equal power using the WHOLE blade, but don't ever think your heal is going to give you the most power.
