I need to test out my knee - BFLY

Hey all. Coming off an MCL injury and want to test out my knee before I go back on the ice. I'd hate to not be ready and 1. hurt it again and 2. blow someone's skate because I wasn't ready yet.

Should I just strap the legs on in my house and do some drops in my kitchen tile? I have to make sure my knee lands on the stacks so should I wear shoes and put the boot straps inside my shoes so they stay put?

I just played out in a pick-up and the knee felt great but I want to make sure it can take the pressure from dropping into a bfly etc.

After 6 months I'm being extra careful because I don't want any more setbacks and have a clinic coming up at the end of July.

Thanks

just go in to any type of position that is similar to a b-fly, for an MCL injury 6 months is alot of time, I suspect you wont have any problems but there will be a "Mental block" that may cause you problems and may make you hesistant on the ice to go into a b-fly.

It was a long time... grade 2 that I didn't get checked out 'till week 10+ so it was too late for a brace just had to be patient. There was still a little tenderness on it when I'd press on the spot up to about a week ago but otherwise it has felt structurally very strong for a few weeks.

I am slightly worried about that mental block that's why I thought of dropping down on it a few times padded up but I know it'll only take me a couple saves on the ice to let it go.

Thanks

Strap on the pads at home, and try a couple...good for stretching too, get a little flexability back. I wear shoes when I do this.

When I have come back to the ice from knee injuries, I am tentative for sure dropping into the butterfly. Once that first rush comes though, I drop down, and it's all good.

Good luck.

wow how ironic to read this now since i JUST blew my MCL out sunday night!!! i'm wearing a knee brace on it now..the docs said 6-8 weeks to heal up...

i was wondering if anyone knew how long after it heals should one try to use it again? i think i've got the same pretensions as the thread parent...

Since I've been out for so long I've had plenty of time to search it out in here and in another group and I've heard a range from your docs to a year but since you're in a brace now, hopefully you'll have better luck than I did. I would just recommend let your doctor guide you on when to get back into the net. Basically, about a month and a half ago mine told me I was clear to do just about anything... weight training, running etc but avoid net and contact until the symptoms were completely gone. His son is a goalie too which helped since he was very familiar with the stresses of the position etc.

Good luck Demon.

Thanks Scooter

When I blew mine out it was 6 to 8 weeks and right at the 8 week mark I woke up and it felt like it was never hurt. Now my right knee is killing me but does not have the same kind of pain as the left. This one is just weak and hurts pretty much all the time. July 8th appt. to get the news.

Just before the 8 week mark, how did it feel? I'm wondering if I just crossed that barrier too.

Personally, I don't think that it is ever too late to wear a brace. You could wear one when it is unnecessary, but never the other way around. I am wearing the full hard brace now and it gives me that extra comfort of knowing that I have something on that 'almost' prevents it from getting worse again.

I would recommend that you pick one up, and a good one too. Don't cheap out since your knees mean a lot to your game and future fun.

Good luck.

The Docs remarks about it being too late was strictly about helping it heal. not the prevention side of things. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for sure.
