So good luck, perhaps AB is a little easier than B.C.

End rant.
You can get a private MRI, sometimes same day or at least within the week.
If it is diagnostically relevant, the gubmint may refund the cost.

would a knee brace help?
Brace won't help much for meniscus, other than reminding you that you have a knee injury.

One would need that money up front though, I have even looked into private surgery. Way too much money for me.

Thanks for the tip though!

Knee injuries have to be about the worst. I had a rather serious one last year. The D-man took a slap shot from the point, I went down in a B-fly. At the last moment, the puck changed directions, and instinctively so did I. My kneecap popped right out of the socket, and I was in immediate pain. Thanks to 10% positioning, and 90% pure luck, the put was in my glove and the whistle blew. I was on the ice for 5 minutes trying to straighten it out, but that didn't work. I was helped into the locker room by a couple of teammates with the paramedics. They had to cut my pants, and sweatpants because i could not straighten my leg. Off to the hospital I went, and while the doc was trying to straighten it a tad for a better quality x-ray, it popped back in. He described it as a "kaplunk" sound that he hasn't really heard before. The relief was almost instant.

Knees can be very tricky. Hockey injuries can be even more confusing to comprehend since our legs aren't meant to flare, and the majority of the saves we make put our body in awkward positions.

Ever since then I have been wearing a knee brace. I feel fine now, but just want to do anything possible to prevent it in the future. Some day a childhood/teen hood of being a baseball catcher and a hockey goalie will catch up to me. Just hope its later rather than sooner.

knee injuries are very tricky indeed. It's been 2 almost 3 weeks since i pulled my MCL in my right knee. I've been wearing a knee lock for that entire time and on crutches. I'm lucky i didn't tear it completely or i'd be out for almost a year. it's a partial tear (you can tell since if your lower leg doesn't resist being moved to the outside... mine did still during the initial doc visit). The ortho doc said if it doesn't scar though, i could still have to have surgery. I'll do an mri if that's the case. right now i'm banking on it to scar and heal in about 6-8 weeks. I should be in a knee brace untill i start phy therapy. I'm hoping this thing heals up stronger than before. i'm sure it will if i treat it right

Yup that's exactly what I feel. It's worst after riding a bike that's to small for me. I could barely walk for a day after that. In hockey, I get a sharp pain near the end of the game when I try to stretch my legs.

Update - 4 weeks later

Okay so my X-rays came up negative so I am in line for an MRI on August 11th. So the Process did not take that long to get the MRI Appointment but I have not skated since the injury or done any heavey physical activity involving my legs and knees besides what the physio therapist ordered.

So far so good. I have full motion in my knee without discomfort but I do feel a little something when I kinda twist the knee a little akward. not sure but I still have about 4 weeks remaining to let this knee heal.

At that time I will asses what I need to do after the MRI, see if there is cartiledge tearing or not.

Highly unlikely that x-rays would ever show anything... it's just a test to do in order to put you in line for the next test... the MRI.
Nicely done on getting in for August... maybe I should try Edmonton.

Have decided to get mine done as well... tried rehab'ing it for the last 6 months, but it's simply too unstable. Unfortunately... I still have to go through the process and line up for an MRI. Knee Sx being an elective... I'll be way down on the list.
I may go private.

Now it's a matter of when do I want to do this in terms of rehab and missing hockey, skiing, etc...

Should have pursued this in March, but i was hoping I could just stabilize it on my own.

Best of luck with yours. Hopefully your ligaments are strong... meniscii, too.

Well the physio therapist manipulated the knee and tested for any tears and swelling. there was abit but no discoloration.

Also the knees were both in shape as he said if there were tears I would be screaming in pain from the manipulation.

I am booking another appointment today with Glen Sather Sports Clinic

GLEN SATHER SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC - Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic - University of Alberta

See my Therapist to see my progress soon. I can now do full 90 degree bends in my knee without pain just flaring it outward is a little sore. but I can jump up and down without any strange feeling etc.

I can squat down and flex the knee all the way as well without pain. So I need to see the therapist to see what he says. Again I will be taking another month off to be safe.

gotta save those knees.

That is not necessarily true, I'm afraid.

Aye. A goalie buddy of mine had a slight tear of his MCL and he said it never hurt at all. He said his knee just felt "different" but pain-free. He was ordered to stop playing for a month and it healed fine.

Good luck and best wishes, homey!

That's ususally a grade 1 MCL tear or better. Grade 2's (what i got) can be pretty painful and a grade 3 or more requires surgery (it's a complete tear). That's what the doctor told me the other day...

so far its been great.

it will take time to adapt but think of it as you only have 2 knees hurt or not you got them for life and ...........................Kolzig wears one.
i wear one of those right now man that's the biggest difference from reinjury and playing again lol!
