Just got diagnosed with mono.. help please!
I am so pissed right now, for the past few weeks i havent been myself, ive been tired and just came down with a swollen throat so i went to the doctors, they said that they iwll test me for strep, and if it is negative then a mono test. Since both of my parents are in the medical feild they said i didnt have the symptoms for it, i didnt worry. Well it turns out i had a very postive testing of mono that came back. Now it turns out i cant work this goalie camp im at for the week, and Thursday i was supposed to go to NH for a tournament with my team... YEAH thats not happening now. So they tell me I cant play hockey or do anything for a month, I just wanted to know if this is true, and what the alternatives i can do. This really sucks because i am moving up north in a month, August the 8th exactly and im going into training camp without playing hockey or doing anything the month before.. I am so disturbed i dont know what to think.
Thanks alot

Been in your position before.........My advice take the month off. I didn't i started working out about 2 weeks after they told me i had it, and it took a huge tole on my body in the long run. Not to mention that i lost 35 lbs during the month and a half i had it. Also during mono i believe it's your spleen thats is enlarged and if you do exercise you put yourself at a pretty high risk for bursting it. Just listen to the doctors, and if you're in decent shape now it wont take long for everything to come back........... On a side note start rolling with some cleaner girls from now on

yeah thats what im scared of, that if i do go on even a week early im gonna make it last longer. I have heard bad stories of like 3 months and i dont want that happening. I guess the good thing is that it could never come back though right? And no comment on the cleaner girl part, its been takin care of. Its how i first noticed i got mono... cmon though, who doesnt tell someone they have it?

lol yah you're right that's pretty shady stuff..... I actually got mono from just being so worn down, and doing to much. I had it but my girlfriend at the time didn't needless to say that caused some ummm problems lol. I skated once when i had mono and could not move on the ice, i felt like i was going to die after about three shots. Your case may not be as bad as mine, if you're feeling up to it try a light workout. If you feel fine then you could probably do easy workouts, but if your dead 5 minutes in you're probably better off just taking the time off.

uh ... what was that? Hey, Wallp, did you not read the bit about how mononucleosis enlarges your spleen, which is then in danger of bursting? A ruptured spleen can kill you.
My roommate saw his belly distending in the emergency room and the surgeons were asking him to sign the release forms. He said he could see his belly distending, give him the goddamn forms and get to it! They did, found his ruptured spleen, removed it, sewed him up, and he was ... not going to die. A week in the hospital and he was better.
Don't screw around.
And fergoshsakes, if you have questions about this sort of thing, then ask your doctor! Why do you think anyone here would have better advice than someone with a degree in medicine? What, is anyone an expert now, and a real expert not someone you want to ask?

Do EXACTLY what your doctor says and do NOT listen to any idiot on the board who tells you otherwise. Do not risk your health on the piss poor advice of a non-professional!

I'm reminded of a line of Sigourney Weaver's in one of the Aliens sequels.
Have you never heard of the germ theory of disease? It's the remarkable new idea that it's not bad smells or lethargy that cause disease, but incredibly tiny particles, or germs, that can get transmitted from one person to another. Louis Pasteur (you should Google him) has written some articles on the subject and even is rumored to have come up with a way to make people immune to rabies.
I wonder if they'll ever discover what causes mononucleosis. You know, some people actually think it's a virus!

Don't play, take the doctors advice. Getting an extra month of practice isn't worth risking your health or life. Your body is vulnerable and as timber mentioned especially your spleen, not exactly the time you want to be throwing your body in front of pucks.

I think you will be lucky if it is only a month. My daughter caught it at the end of her volleyball season last year[March] and was not able to try out for soccer[end of April] because she didn't have the strength.

the weird thing is, is that i played until today. I was teaching at a goalie clinic and i didnt feel tired or anything.
ThePM- I didnt mean it like that, I just ment if it was safe to play maybe 3 weeks into it.
I am going to listen to my doctors of course, and I was doing research online and a bunch of college players, and OHLers have gotten mono and have been out for about 4weeks. I just wanted to hear if anyone else had gotten it, and how they dealt with it.
Thanks

My girlfriend had it my freshman year of college. I guess I got something from her, but not it. I slept for 14 hours one night and had no problems after that.
Outside of that useless story, listen to the doctor. A friend had it in HS and tried to come back early, but wasn't himself and was more worried about getting hit and rupturing his spleen. Not worth it.

3 months back in about '88 or so. Don't fool with this. As others have said, listen to your doctor. It can be lethal.
Rest up and come back strong.

I am not a doctor, but I play one on TV.
Do NOT, I repeat, Do NOT mess around with this.
I have had several friends, try to ignore MONO.
They did not win the battle.
It will only take longer, "in the long run" to heal properly.
