Using The Voice

Hello everyone, ive been dancing around the idea of making this thread. But you always hear that the goalie has to be very vocal on the ice . And my question is , what are some of the things you guys say. Like i got the basics like screen, man on, in front ect. Im just wondering what you other goalies say.
if this is not a helpfull thread i appologize
Thanks

i usually try to help my d out with things they can't see. I feel it is very important to be their eyes for them when they're going into the corners and don't have the time to look over their shoulders to see if they're being presured.

If they're chasing a dumped puck in to the corner ill yell "you got time, you got time" or "man on, man on." Sometimes i'll yell "use the net" or "walk". l'll call out a reverse behind the net or on the boards if there's a guy right on them and support coming in. I'll call out "near board" or "far board", "wrap it," or "look up" or even "you've got (insert winger's name who's breaking up the boards)"

I find being vocal during a game not only helps my team but also helps me to stay focused and in the game. I find when I'm not playing well i am quiet and vice-versa.. when i go quiet my game slips. 60 minutes goes by a lot slower when the action is down the other end for most of the time and the mind starts to wander to what i'm doing after the game or picking out the cuties in the stands. When its slow down my end and i haven't seen a puck in a few minutes i will still yell even when the play is down the other end, for my own benefit.

some other things i yell are "screen" if my d is screening me. I will move my d around on face-offs in my zone if i don't like where they are. sometimes when they are battling in the corners i will tell them to "eat it" meaning freeze it on the boards for a whistle or i will yell "ice it" if we need the whistle. On a 2-1 i will yell "i got the shot" because i want the shot and i want him to play the middle and take the pass. On a one-on-one i will yell out "step up" right as they hit the blue line.

I NEVER yell screen anymore. It's like an invite for a shot I know I can't see. I'll either tell my team that I'm screaming something else or find a non-verbal, stick-based way to convey my message.

Bingo. last game I did that, 2 seconds after I shouted the guy wired a slapshot past me. If you yell screen, the guy in front (and his team) know that they are doing their job. I've yet to come up with a way of letting the team in front of me know without giving it away.

A lot of what I would recommend doing is active technique. Communication never works for me unless you've got a smart d-man who recognizes screens or can do the code word thing.

Good points on communicating with the D here. I too, never yell "screen" for the same reasons you guys mention. I let my guys know that if they hear a name, they're screening me as my my other communications with them are relatively simple like heads up, etc..

Part of the trick is not to use their real names.

Which is why the whole verbal thing never works with my teams.

I had my d-man today break his stick behind my net and when he didn't realize it, I started screaming his name. Never heard me. He didn't realize until the ref looked at him, then down at his stick. Can't say much though, since he was by far and wide the best defenseman I've ever played with. The point being, you can say whatever you want, the guys actually have to listen to you for it to matter.

I"m a pretty quiet guy anyway, and I tend to be so focused on the puck that I forget to call instructions.
An exception is if my team is sucking and I know they are capable of more, then I shout instructions to get them going, and surprisingly it often works.

On the tipping off the bad guys by yelling "screen" I have yelled it when I wasn't screened just to force the shot. Actualy for some dumb reason I don't say screen, I say "lemme see" but you get the point.
More and more though I am working on just looking through the screen regardless of if it my guy or a bad guy.
I sort of took the idea I can only control what I do and worked on things like rebound control and fighting to see screens. I really should improve communication though.

Yeah, likewise. If my defense is screening me, I'll yell "move", the guys on my team know that means I can't see. If an opposing forward is screening me, I just yell "get him out of there" or some such. I never, ever use "screen" or "I can't see".

I really need to work on my communication.. I don't use it nearly as much as I should

I will yell can't see, or screen when my D is in the way. If the other team is screen I yell get him out, but have noticed ( after reading this thread) that when I yell it they are taking the shots then. On a dump in I will tell the D; One on, 2 ( if 2 guys are on the D), one/ two hard. I will also tell them where to pass the puck out if the guy is open enough. As I am in a novice league the D is watching the guy who is forechecking not the Center or wingers. I will have to work with the D to come up with a different word for screen, like that idea.

i shout all game long:

-can't see
-i got the shot
-man on
-lots of time
-watch the man in front
-go around
-same side
-up the boards
-it's over (when power play is coming to an end)

even if i'm just shouting encouragement:

-way to look
-good hustle
-nice play
-way to take the man

i'm strictly beer league, so i even slam my stick when the other goalie makes a good save.
