53+3+0 =A hockey mess

Since there hasn't been any summer hockey for me this yr(rink renovations) I've really missed playing so I decided to drive an hour to a stick session.MISTAKE!!!! Now.... I'm 53 yrs old, haven't played since the last weekend in April and I've spent most of my summer painting ,so haven't had time to get to the gym w/the exception of a few isolated visits so my fitness level is 0...............
I show up and there's only 3 skaters . They start out w/breakaways and every 5 or 6 shots I have to step out of the net and catch my breath. This goes on for about 45 min.I needed to keep taking a breather.Man I'm thinking I'm really out of shape. By the end of the stick session my hammy and groin are sore and the outside of my right ankle is sore. I really was beat.
Well..... my buddy was there too and he had an 8 o'clock pickup group that he played with coming on and wouldn't you know it they were short a goalie. So I said I'd play. He assured me it was a low key group of older guys. Surprise .... a number of college players show up to get in some skating before going back to school.
The pace was extremely fast , too fast for someone who is sadly out of shape and hasn't played in 3 months.
Actually I did really well considering. made some nice saves but I'm having problems w/my slides on dekes. A few goals got tucked between my pads and post because I didn't push off to slide down to post. So I was pretty happy w/the results but I am definitely paying today. Everything hurts. I'm pathetic
Paul

Probably stupid ,more than anything else ,expecting to go out on the ice like that after such a long layoff and w/such a poor level of fitness.
Need to start going to the gym before my fall/winter league starts in Oct.

Perhaps it wasn't the smartest decision but you went out there and gave it your all. It didn't go as well as you hoped but now you know where you stand and what you have to work on. That is a good thing, Paul.

Hey, as long as your standing after the game things are ok. Important part is you realize what you gotta work on.

It's a trip that if your not working out all the time after 40 maybe 41 it's very noticable. It's awesome that you stayed both sessions....I had a work injury this summer and have been off the ice for a month already and can't go back until mid sept. Thankfully I have to do exercises for my foot so now I do cardio with the foot exercises..
