Based upon the description I am pretty sure that my diagnosis of the event is bang on. However there is no way to know the other damage that can occur.
A dislocated knee cap can be innocuous and you can be back participating in sports in a couple weeks. Or there could have been some other damage to the joint, including damage to the actual kneecap and patella tendon, which is why I suggested that he see a Doc and get a firm diagnosis and as Leafer said, prognosis as to what his recovery time objective is.
Due to the number of moving parts and some of the stationary ones in the knee he's probably going to need an MRI to determine if there is any additional damage, and unfortunately he will have to wait for the swelling to subside to get that taken care of.
