Question Aggressiveness

Everyone keeps on telling me that I need to play more aggressive. What exactly do they mean? The way I interpret to play aggressive is to knock down whoever comes near your net. Is this what they mean?

Aggressive means to come out more, like you really want the puck.

That's what they mean. Coming out and challenging the shooter, cutting down the angle and giving the shooter less to shoot at.

Don't stay in your crease, challenge the shooter. Best work on your recovery and butterfly slide, just in case they fake the shot then pass to the corner of the net.

Essentially it means coming further out of your crease to challenge the shooter more. There are a couple of things this means you have to work on:

1. Angles. You need to have really good angles when you come out, or the shooter will burn you every time. The further you come out, the easier it will be to control the angles, but you need to practice this.

2. Lateral movement across the crease & recovery. As the poster above me said, if you come out and the shooter makes a pass instead of firing it, you need to be able to get across your crease fast. The farther out you come, the more net you're leaving open if he passes it across the rink. You need to work on the speed of your butterfly slide and recovery, t-pushes etc.

3. Do you play the puck much? An aggressive goalie is a goalie who isn't afraid to come out of their crease and puckhandle.

I've recently had to adapt my game a lot to play a more aggressive style. I used always be too deep in my crease, and as a very small goalie, this means I was really getting owned by snipers. I found that the most important thing for me to focus on was my awareness of my position - how far out I was, how good my angles were, how I'd need to move to cover the most net if the shooter passed it.

go out there and stay focused in your mind, but be an animal! Get yourself fired up and go challenge the shooter. Make sure he does something special to beat you! Thats being aggresive

Put more power into your movements. Push off and stop harder. Aim to be as crisp and explosive as possible. Just because the puck may be moving around in a lazy fashion doesn't mean you have to. Get where you need to be as soon as possible. Also, just because your team has the puck doesn't mean that you can slack off. Stay deep in your stance and still move with the puck as if the other team has it.

Attitude. Donīt just wait for the puck to block it. Get to it. Want it. Be alert. Be fast towards the puck. Attack!

I disagree with alot of this. If the puck moves around like a turtle, why waste energy on being super explosive and all that, especially if your own team has the puck? Be in your stance, thatīs fine, but if everything is cool, be cool. When things heat up, bring out the beast in you.

Adjust to the situation. Thatīs my take on this.

Put Bengal and Jansson together and you have the meaning of being aggressive.

Don't play lazy. Yes, there will be times that you won't have to be lightning fast but you will have to stay alert, quick and deliberate with your movements.
That includes times when your team has the puck. They are human and can cough it up and you have to be ready.
