Goalie In-Season Skills Test

Hey everyone! I'm getting into my second year of coaching, and the biggest thing I am pushing for in the new season is numbers-based player evaluations throughout the season. I'm not looking to replace opinion-based evaluations of players, but rather accompany that with data so that they can see on paper how they compare to the others, and show them proof of said opinions/evaluations. Nothing new for hockey, just for our club.

Now there's a lot of stuff out there for collecting data on players (shot MPH, skating speed, target skills, etc.) but not for goalies. I have a few things set aside to use, but I'm looking for more drills/tests that will produce a measurable result. The idea is that we'd like to be able to see data on each player and goalie, so that we can show objective proof of improvement or non-improvement throughout the season. For example, one of the tests could be having them run through the "X-Box" in-crease drill and timing it - adding penalty time for breaking form or stopping short. So, if anyone would like to contribute their ideas, please post, PM me, or e-mail Petey4485@hotmail.com. I am looking for ideas on measuring any of the following:
- skating speed
- save frequency
- shot accuracy/power
- endurance
- anything else you think is important

I'll be putting together a PDF form of all this to use, re-use, and update over the years. I will make this available to all in hopes that we can all strive to help our goalies improve, accomplish more, and have fun. Thanks everyone!

PS - I've already done searches and pulled a few things aside, so GSBB nazi's no need to comment thanks

I'm guessing it would be hard to beat the iron cross as an objective measurement of a goalie's ability to move. It is highly customizable for level of difficulty for different ages. Anyone not tired doing the iron cross likely isn't doing it hard enough.

Are you using the rebound control rating system? I keep hearing that rebound control is really what separates the pros from the beer leaguers. I remember reading about it here though it may have been lost in the keeks purge.

The Iron Cross was one of the first things I had considered. Will definitely be in there.

No I don't think I came across this before. I'll look around and see. Great idea!

The rebound system is his 1-5 ranking:

1-control of the puck
2-to the corners, preferably with elevation
3-rebound straight back to the shooter, or at least infront of the goalie and he's still square to it
4-rebound to an off-angle area with poor position resulting
5-a goal

Tally those up and the lower score wins.
