Shot to the knee
Here's the story. I paly on the SIUE JV team, but for Varsity practice, they like to have 3 goalies there, so they asked me to come to practice to sub in. Well, on the second drill I participated in, I took a shot off the right knee. I wear the RBK knee protectors, but somehow, the shot hit my knee. I felt it immediately. I came out, layed on the ice for a while, then went to the bench and sat out the rest of practice. Then when practice was over, I was getting undressed and my knee was already swollen (about 30-45 min. after the initial injury). I could barely walk, and the next day wasn't much better. I looked up some stuff on WebMD and it sounds like a PCL injury. Now, it's been 4 days, it still hurts, and is swollen a little bit, so I'm getting it looked at at in two hours. I have practice tonight, and I really want to play, I'm just worried about getting up. It doesn't hurt to touch it, just putting my body weight on it (i.e. going up stairs, or standing up from sitting down). Has anybody else experienced a PCL injury (if that's what it is) from a puck?

Go to the Doc and see what he says.
If it is nothing major, then go to this thread
Slapper off inside of knee - thoughts?
and take two doses of what Dr. Sloth prescribes.

Well, the doc said it's most likely a partial MCL tear... Not what I wanted to hear. I'm getting an MRI either today or tomorrow. So we'll see.

a tear? From taking a puck on the knee? I'd go see another doc.

Funny you should say this. When this happened to me, the orthopaedic surgeon mentioned ligament damage first. I was dumb and was only using thigh boards at the time. I'll never forget the sound it made.
When my knee ligaments tested OK, he checked out a fracture of the head of the tibia. That would have been the end of my season. Thankfully. it was very deep bone bruise, almost 1/2 way through the bone. The surgeon said my injury was exactly what he sees in automobile accidents.
See a doctor.

This just happened to me today. During warmups I just got done taking a shot then another person came and slapped one at my leg. Now my leg was turned and it hit my left knee. I wear no knee protection, and there is a bruise on it. Now I have been having problems with my knee since I was 12 (i'm 15 now). I've been to the doctor once (2 years ago), and he gave me an OTC drug, which really didn't help. Every time I am done playing hockey, my knee hurts. I am just wondering if I should go to the doctor, or just let the pain go away naturally because the pain usually goes away by wednesday (assuming I play on the weekends).

this last sunday durring warmup a guy took a wrist shot when i was not looking and it hit me right on my left thigh to the left of my knee. it hit between my breezers and my knee guards. it is basically where your thigh muscle sort of ends at and it hurts like a bitch. i wish players would look to see what they are shooting at.

Something very similar happened to me last week. While practicing a 3 on 1 breakout, I took a snap-shot right above my knee on the inside part of my leg while sliding from one side of the crease to another (I wear no knee protection currently since thigh boards were made illegal in my league).
I had instant excruciating pain where I could barely stand, and skating was almost impossible. I was told to ice it immediately and helped off the ice. Our trainer looked at it and said it was a soft-tissue contusion of my lower quad (which is basically a slightly more intense bruise). He told me to ice it for the first 24 hours after the injury and then gave me a "Contrast Therapy" Regiment to perform the next two days since I was told they expected me to play this past weekend regardless of the injury.
The therapy consisted of getting both a heat pack and ice pack and alternating from one to another. First start with the heat pack and heat the injury and stretch at the same time for 20 mins, then immediately after put an ice pack on the bruise and elevate the injury above your heart and rest it for 15 mins. Then put heat on it again for 10 mins and stretch, followed by ice for 5 mins and rest. Do this process twice a night for as long as the pain persists.
It seemed to work for me, I was able to play in both games last weekend, and the pain is completely gone one week later.
Good luck!

Caught a nice one tonight. Went right through my RBK kneepads like they werent even there in the beginning of the second period. Can barely bend my knee. Needless to say, we lost bad (8-2). Playing a Giggy-fly style is painful.
Worst part is, I have a Navy Physical Fitness Test on Sunday which includes a run.

Imagine if I wasnt wearing knee protection. My knee wouldve shattered in a million pieces. I cant imagine why anyone would not wear any, and there are some out there.
Say, is it better to ice with the knee bent, extended, or somewhere in between? Or does it even matter?
