There's a difference between gaining muscles and bulking up, gaining muscle would definately improve your game, speed, explosiveness, etc

The reason you get heavier when you gain muscle is because muscle is heavier than fat, when converting your fat into muscle you gain weight.

Bulking up on the other hand won't do you much good

More muscle dosnt = more explosive

Having more muscle dosnt allways equate to more strength or more explosiveness.

More muscle mass does give you more potential for strength and more potential for explosiveness.

If you are at or close to your peak strength and explosiveness level at a given bodyweight, then gaining some more muscle mass can give you more strength and explosive potential.

On the reverse side if you have more musle mass than you are able to use in an explosive manner then droping some weight (yes even muscle mass) can improve your perfomance.

When I was 185 pounds i was extreamly explosive and strong. Now I am 203 and unfortunatly its not extra muscle mass. So my quickness and explosiveness has dropped considerably. Part of this is due to being weaker and less explosive and part is due to being nearly 20 pounds heavier.

As mentioned earlier everyone will have an ideal playing weight based on height bone structure and length of limbs. The trick is being sure to be making the most of your strength and explosive potential at whatever weight is ideal for you.

Just some tidbits to add fuel to the fire

(1) I always had a good fitness level ~ got it from my soccer playing days.

This is something that is really pushed for soccer players. We ran alot. ALOT. At least about 45 minutes to an hour at practice (mind you this was University level soccer, so more is expected). Moreover, soccer goalkeeping training is tough, but games are not. They kick the **** out of us in practice... to the point where I'd say we work harder then the other guys (we run & do other stuff ON TOP OF what the we do with the team & for us there is no standing around in shooting drills, time the players get off). It translated to my ice game. I played soccer at 200 lbs just FYI.

(2) I'm down a bit on the weight ~ I have been trimming down a bit, where I sit at roughly 212 lbs or so.

I'd like to stay here. Pushing 220 lbs was too much for me IMO. I carry weight well, but still, there is a limit. Mass is good but I figure I've found my peak weight.

(3) Haven't noticed the joint thing, may be too early

I haven't noticed any issues with my joints. They feel great. I do alot of leg stabilizing exercises which may be the reason. Alot of machine work (I know you critics out there hate it) but the exercises were reccommended to me by a physiotherapist and personal trainer to deal with some patello-femoral syndrome I get in my knees sometimes. I previously used to get back spasms (when I played for "real") that would act up... sometimes I wonder that now knowing what I do things would change.

Oh well Thanks for the replies. Love your insights!

About Price and Ward, just because you're in the NHL doens't nessarly mean that your body is a work of art, it's possible to play at a very high level and still be over weight or have fat, but that's just my guess...
Exactly, think Belfours' body was all that lean??

My guess is its all relative to your build- bone structure, height etc...

Im 5' 9" 225lbs

A friend is 6' 3" 165lbs

Which of us has a better stamina? Who can run faster? Who can do more chin-ups? Faster 40 yd times.....

If you thought my 6' 3" buddy for any of those, your dead- wrong. Granted, my ideal body-weight is 210, but God built me to be a Fullback- I just chose hockey anyway...

I weighed about 220 a year ago. Signed up to do the Ironman in Madison. Trained my ass off and lost 40 pounds. I mean literally trained my ass off, as in I had to buy new cloths after biking 4,000+ miles, running over 750 miles, and swimming a LOT.

I cannot imagine playing at 220 anymore. At 180 (I am 6-1) I feel great and energized. I'm not wiped out after I play, whether it is an hour game or 2+ hours of pickup.

That said, I don't play any BETTER than I did before. Granted, I played a LOT less over the time I was training for IM, and I did a whole lot of slow-twitch muscle workouts with absolutely no speedwork at all, so that could be a big part of it, but, despite a lack of improvement, I FEEL better when I am done playing.

Oh, and my body aches less after an intense session on the ice. Kinda like how it is a lot easier on your body to run when you are lighter, I really notice the decreased stress on my joints playing goal now that I am 40 pounds lighter.

I'm not sure if it was last season or 2 seasons ago but I remember watching on FSNY that DiPietro actually came into camp with too much muscle and they made him do alot more cardio and more reps w/ less weight to lose some of it because it was affecting his flexibility and speed. Guess everyone needs to find that perfect ratio.

I used to play at 5'7" 155 and didn't feel to bad, maybe a little slow. I do feel quicker at 5'7" 130 but any goals are always blamed on the defense either way.

weight is two fold fat and muscle haha.

the weight ward could of lost could be getting him down to a low body fat %.

too much muscle will slow you down, like when you see a muscle man at the beach,

the best sort of body you want is that od a sprinter. if you look at them, there very low in body fat, very muscular and very explosive.

gaining fat will slow you down. will make you lathargic, and as said put added stress on the joints.

an ideal would be to measure body fat rather than weight, or body mass index,

look at tyson at his peak, about 5'9 and weighing about 16 stone, buf not fat. according to the bm index he would be obease.

if you get yourself down to 13% body fat you'd be roughly near peak, but you need to be toned too
