Playing with DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)

I ran a 5k (3.1 mile) race yesterday and thought I'd be fine tonight as I'm pretty used to running that distance and recovering in time. But as soon as I got on the ice tonight for practice the DOMS really kicked in...my shins burnt like hell and my recoveries were terrible. I tried to play through it but I was no use for my team-mates so I decided to come off after 20 mins.

I know that the only suitable remedy for this is just to rest for a few days until it's subsided but does anyone have any tips to counter the effects???

I already use a post-workout recovery shake after any strenuous activity.

Barring an actual injury, inflamation is the usual culprit in DOMS. Rest, ice, NSAIS, Omega 3s, or some combination of these are the only realistic courses of action.

Omega 3 fish oil is actually a pretty good anti-inflamatory. Some doctors are actually prescribing it as a pain reliever. You have to take a boat load of it to get the effect though, like 6 grams a day of EPA+DHA. Flax and hemp Omega 3 are ALA, will not have the same effect.

If you're getting a soreness in your shins, be very careful. You may have shin splints which can lead to stress fractures. I seen guys drop like crazy at Navy Officer Candidate School becaue of shin splints/stress fractures, which comes from running. When you run, make sure you are wearing proper running sneakers that fit right.
If it's just muscle soreness, it should go away while you do more excercise, but it will come back hard th next few days. When I lift at the gym and do triceps and biceps within 2 days of eachother, the soreness goes away while lifting, but for the next few days, I'm walking around like a T-Rex because I cant bend nor extend my arms.

DOMS is unavoidable after any hard effort. Maybe that day you ate or drank something you shouldn't of. Maybe you changed something in your routine. Maybe you pushed harder and didn't notice it until after, on the ice. Maybe you should said no to your girlfriend
