How to yell Louder! During a game

After the last game in last weekends tournament, my teammates came up to me and asked what the hell I was yelling throughout the game. Apparently all they hear a is muffled yelling, but nothing audible. I am kinda pissed tho because I am yelling as loud as I can, and it gives me a headache by the end of the game, and I know its important to talk to your teammates, but they just can't hear me. I am thinking it may be the mask, and htat if I could lower the chin so that my mouth was visible out the bars, it might help them hear me talking.

Also I found I had a sore throat after games where I would attempt to yell to my teammates while playing, like I was sick. I tried googling methods to yell 'correctly' but it just gave me all kinds of crap, saying you need to release your inhibitions, and talk louder.

Just release your inhibitions and talk louder... just kidding. I had the same problem all I did was lower the chin on my mask. Now my teammates could hear me just fine. Try it!

You don't need to yell louder, just smarter. You don't have to tell your team a story, just what's going on.

"Man on"
"Feet"
"Dump it"
"Slot"

Single or two word statements will work much better than trying to yell louder. "Man on!" works much better than "Hey, there's a guy coming up behind you!" every time.

Expanding on what previous people have stated, I always tell my goalies that communication has 3 parts:
- Simple
- loud
- clear.

Maybe adjusting your mask will help with the volume, but simple phrases will certainly help with the clarity.

Start wearing a combo. It is a huge difference when it comes to your team hearing you through a cage or a mask chin plate.

As a recovering skater I can attest that the average beer-league D-man loses a lot of his faculties when playing the puck in his own zone, especially under pressure.

While your mask may not be helping, it likely may not be the problem.

Hearing what my cage-less defense partner was saying was often impossible. The brain just isn't processing anything more than short barks, and all I'd hear was indistinct shouting. Often, by the time you realize somebody's shouting at you, it's too late to hear what they said.

I found it best as a D-man, and see the best results in net with a single word repeated.

Instead of "you've got a man coming", try "Man! Man! Man!" (more often though, this call is "Man! Ma--" *turnover in the slot* "aw nuts".

Instead of "you've got time", try "Time! Time! Time!".

Give it a shot next game.

Also, since you're shouting so loud that you're hurting yourself, I'm guessing that you're probably only making matters worse. They're not having trouble hearing you, they're having trouble understanding you. A scream is a lot harder to understand that a loud speaking voice.

I'm not a big vocal expert and might not be 100% accurate but this is true from what I understand...

You're less likely to strain your voice if you yell in the lower end of your vocal range. Think of it as singing. Even if you are not singing, your words still have a "note." When we yell, we tend to go to the high extreme of our range, which is not only much harder on your voice, but doesn't always carry as well through the chaos (what do you hear through the wall when there's music next door? Usually the bass).

Also in the singing realm, try to get more volume by diaphragm support and the amount of air you're pushing through rather than straining in your throat. The sore throat happens when when your throat tissues are doing too much of the work. Think of a trumpet. The tube is only amplifying the vibration of the lips on the mouthpiece, but the tube or "throat" of the instrument doesn't really vibrate.

When you get that grating feeling in your throat and that Howard Dean scream quality in your yell, that's when your throat is vibrating too much and fuzzing out, which is what causes the soreness. It's like the fuzziness you get when you push speakers to their limit. Less focused, more painful.

I will preface that I do teach voice, though not classical voice.

So the diaphragm.
Instead of breathing from your chest, breath from your stomach. practice shouting "Hey!" but imagine the sound starting from below your belly button. When you shout "Hey" your stomach should contract, but nothing should be going on with your chest or shoulders.
As silly as it might seem you can also imagine how a shot put is thrown, and make that movement imagining it is your voice being thrown, as you shout "Hey".
Now obviously you cannot do that on the ice, but it will help train you to use your diaphragm for the best projection.

Another quieter exercise for your diaphragm is to make a hissing sound and pulse it by contracting your stomach "sss sss sss sss"
Again the only movement is in your stomach, not your chest or shoulders.

The "hey" exercise is better for your purposes though. If you can keep what you yell to one or two syllables it will be easier to project.
Also exagerate your pronounciation.

Keep yout throat relaxed...yoyo is bang on on this. If you have a scratchy sound you are potentialy damaging your voice*...in this case probably it would only result in a sore throat, but if you played several times a week over a period of months you could even develope nodes....and you don't want that! Always always always imagine the sound is starting from below your belly button and you will naturally open your throat and not do damage. Also the sound will be clearer and louder because you wont have neck muscles getting in the way of the sound.

A mask with a large window does help, and also they are cooler because you don't have you breath bouncing off the chindrop and back on your face. This is one of many things I love about my sportmask.

*rock singers and extreme metal singer do have techniques to get that scratchy sound without doing damage, but I pretty much guarentee you aren't using those techniques.

Well I checked my mask, and my bottom lip is definitely visible through the cage, so I don't think theres much I can do there. I think I have started to lengthen my 'speeches', and am going to be making a point to limit them to the 1 - 2 words you guys suggested. I can't really test out your excersize yet spider, because its 1 am .. but I will be sure to work on it, and talk with my friend next pick-up to see if it is solving the problem.

Once thing still bothers me tho, I remember reading an article on here, where the dude said that it is best, if not only the coaches, but the fans can hear you yelling durings games. Maybe its something you develope from practice like pretty much everything else, but it does seem rather impossible right now, haha.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I appreciate it.

Yelling Louder?

Is this thread really necessary? Do we really need to analyze and break this down ?
Some of the topics that come up seem to be posted just for posting sake.

PS: See thread on goalies shaking hands for more on this
