Pro's playing deep.......on the goal line.

I actually got to kick back and watch a couple of games this weekend.......both Blues Vs. Wings.

I was so amazed that most of the goals that Hasek gave up, besides the ones where he missplayed the puck behind the net, or left the goal all together, took place deep in his crease....almost along the goal line.

Each goal was a shot from the top of the circle, or in that general range, which in my mind would place the goaltender at the top of the crease or beond.....depending on the positioning of the rest of the players. On each one after watching the countless replays I would say to myself- If he was only out another 3,4, or 5 feet that goal would have never went in.

I don't understand, at that level of play you'd think that would be a no-brainer.

Anyone else see the games, and care to comment? Am I missing somthing?

Some goalies make their living on the goaline (Potvin and Burke).
As far as Hasek is concerned, it usually depends upon how much he wants the game. Far too many times i have seen Hasek play games where he doesn't appear to care about the outcome. This may or may not be related to his teams play, as i have seen team play great and terrible in front of him. His saves tend to be sloppier, his fundamentals break down, and he reverts to more of a flopper (early Buffalo days).

Hasek seems a little off his game right now. Being a Wings fan and having Center Ice I have watched all his games this year and this weekend he was playing very deep in net. I don't think that NHL'ers are that much different from the rest of us (except for that whole "skill" thing ) When I play well I am confident of my angles and play way out. When am off; I play deep and usually give up some goals that I would not normally give up. I think he is just not confident right now.. it's bad time of year for that.

Cool

Wow- first post with the new format!

I've noticed that too this weekend with Hasek.

The other thing that I noticed recently, particularly among younger goalies is their lack of upper body control, poor center of balance and ending up on their butts a lot, particularly Boucher, Braithwaite comes to the top of my mind. I'm not a super big Roy fan, but the one thing that I noticed is that he almost always is in total control of his upper body, shoulders in line with hips, etc so that he is so well balanced, which makes it easier to change directions.
I know some goalies are a more scrambling type, but it's awful hard to recover from a save if your on your butt.

I can't belive that he gave up that first goal in the last St Louis game.. That should have been a one goal game for him only the second shot was a dificult shot since it went off a foot... I would kill to have a D work in front of me like that when I leave a rebound I better be able to stop the next shot I don't have anyone clear rebounds or force the angles.. I don't think that Hasek is as floppy as people make him out to be I play very similar to him ( He's not my hero I do NOT try to play like him) and I don't feel that I flop. I have a very good profly with a very upright body postion but sometimes my play is floppy because I want to fake the shooter into a shot I want him to take
not the other way around.. Sometimes this cause a unique body postion that looks bad but it is a planed and praticed move that is under way more control that it looks.. I think haveing extream flexiblity makes this possible I can recover very quickly when others in a similar postion get hung up and have to rotate there body to recover or make a save.. Haveing rubber for joints helps!! If there is anyone that is really flexible chime in and let me know what you think. Freak

Werner?

Did you catch the Blues game last night? Johnny was so deep in the net much of the game he looked like a tunafish! On one save he was so far back in the net it looked like he made the save behind the freakin line.

T-Bo played great but if was in the paddle-down any more in that game I think I would have had to slap him. I swear to god he was in paddle down as Tkachuk took a slapper from the top of the circle!

Guess it's better to be playing Paddle down at the top of the crease than to butterfly on the goal line.
