Groin Injury

Last week. I suffered my first groin pull. While not normally painful, it is annoying and hurts like heck when I try to stretch. Playing is out of the question for now.

I'm putting ice on it, taking Tylenol and whining. Anything else that might help? Also, how long does a slight pull take to mend.

Thanks,

Old Swiss2

Ow!

Suggestion: Change your Tylenol to Ibuprofen. Tylenol works in your brain on the sensation of pain. Ibuprofen works at the site of injury to reduce inflammation.

Stretch gently and don't be tempted to go back too soon. Healing time? I can't say ... it all depends.

In terms of severity, your injury sounds a lot like mine, this past season.

I feel that in addition to the ibuprofen, a bit of light running combined with stretching helped me heal faster than I'd expected. By 'light running' I mean that level of exertion needed to officiate high school baketball. Sometimes you need to go quick but you rarely need the side-to-side movement which I find to be painful after an injury like this.

(Yeah, yeah I know... basketball. What can I say? It's a living and it makes it easier to get approval from 'The Committee' for goalie equipment purchases.)

HI,

I found that compression shorts/bicycle shorts works real well to reduce the possiblity of the injury happening again...

Hey Ole Swiss! Ciao! I wouldn't be too quick in getting back into net. Definitely rest and relaxation first, then after a while [a week or two?] depending how badly you pulled it, you'll probably feel when, some easy stretches.

If it hurts to walk, it's too soon! You don't want to reinjure yourself because then you'll be out longer and probably the chances of reinjury are greater.

I know it's tough to stay off that ice for long, you'll be jonesing for sure to get back, no doubt. Good luck.

The great return is tomorrow after three weeks. Still a little tingy, but the sirens's song is too great for me.

Played this morning and did surprisingly well. Took the advice on the lite running, medication and compression shorts. Late in the game when my legs got tired, I started stretching for pucks (translation: I wasn't moving and out of position and had to try desperate measures) and I felt a little twinge, but nothing meaningful.

Again, thanks for the help.

Great, now see how you feel tomorrow. It's always the next day you find out what's really up.
