Question about NHL goalies recovery moves
Okay, I don't know if I am imagining this or I have missed something, but has anyone noticed that some NHL goalies recover from the sitting position simply by pushing with their gloves. In other words they don't seem to be swinging their legs out to the side, rather they're on their butt then with a simple push of the glove they are back up in their stance. Can anyone else do this?

Conciously, no. But I have been told that once or twice in a game, where there was a lot of traffic in the net, that I've done this move. I have no idea, maybe its the adrenaline giving me the extra strength to push myself up like that.

In truth this is the way it should always be done unless you have plenty of time to get up and don't want to waste the energy to get up this way. I can and do it almost all the time in situations where it is required. This is something you should practice all the time that you can.

They stressed this move a lot at Jon Elkin's. Since I had never tried it before it was tricky the first time, but as sloth said, it's the correct way to get up. The pros at camp do it very quickly.

Okay then next question. Is there a specific technique to this or is it just practice practice practice?

Drop to your butt, assume the snow angel position, and get up by pushing yourself up with your hand and pulling your legs under you. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Just make sure you get a good plant on the ice with your trapper close to your hip. Try to recover your stick and blocker to your stance asap, you shouldn't use your blocker hand to push up. Otherwise as sloth said ,keep practicing, you'll get the hang of it.

Hi Goalers,
I've never been able to do this. BUT watch some clips of Grant Fuhr, he couldn't either!
Cheers,

Richter does it.
Roy did it once when the player knock him from behind on a power play against Anahiem 3 years ago in mid march.(have it on tape)

Last night Passmore popped up from the splits into a ready position with no assistance from his gloves or anything! I about lost it. Quite the cool move!

Well, if you're gonna push up with your glove hand, just make sure you do it right. Cujo's injury was caused by trying to push up, and catching his hand on the mesh of the net.

Work on leg strength. The move isn't accomplished by your arms, all they do is put you in a higher position to get your legs underneath you. Once your legs are up off the ice push up. Squats are a good exercise to help you with this.
When you've mastered that try it without using your arms a la passmore. lean forward then try and put your legs underneath you to a squat position then push. Getting your feet under you is the hardest part. I have been practicing that for at least 5 years and can only do it when I'm fresh.

Isn't it just easier (and better) to recover the normal way?? Or is this only if you wind up on your butt 'cause someone fell on you, pushed you etc...?

Anytime you end up on your butt you should NOT roll over and try to recover because it takes too long and takes your eye off the puck. Recover this way if you can.

Really, getting up from your butt using only your arm is just like breaking dancing in the sense that two common factors must be consistent:
1. You have to have good arm strength.
2. You have to be Filipino.
