Thumbs up Plate Modifications

Well on my new cyclones I got plates to help me slide for roller hockey. (They can be removed when I place ice hockey.) The plate was only on the side of the pad, from my skate to just under where the knee rolls are. So this past weekend I made a plated for the inner boot portion of the pad and it worked great.

I traced a pattern of the inner boot portion of the pad and cut some durable plastic in the correct shape. Then I heated up the plastic so it bent around to the front of the pad a bit. Then after the piece fit well I punched holes in the plastic and corresponding holes on my pads, and tied them on. The plstic slightly over laps the other plate so each piece moves freely and doesn't interfer with the other. They worked awesome. I am now able to slide my pad and skate in a half butterfly and cover the low shots to the post. I've only used them once so there may be some minor adjustments, but so far so good.

The only other thing that might have to be done is to make a small plate for the inside knee but I'm not sure that I will need it yet.

Moogy,

Sound like a good mod. Any photos to show others how to do this would be great.

I don't play roller, and don't plan on it, but I have to say that is by far the best mod I have ever heard of for roller. Fantastic idea.

I made a very similar mod to my Brian's pads for roller play. Helped a ton!!! Just be careful getting snagged on sport court tiles.

I have also tried to plate the inside of the knee. It really didnt add much, but i kept them on for a while. Then, eventually i had to remove them because it tore the strap that i had going thru it.

tonight

Tonight I'm going to play again and I modified the way the plates are tied on. I'll hopefully be able to write a little more about them and take some pictures to show how they are attached. So far the most important thing was curving the plastic to the front of my pad, because that's the first point of contact.

They come on Batrram's inline pads. Not sure if he would sell them seperately.

plates

Hi,
The plate came on the pad but there was no plate where I actually needed one. I'm going to post some picture of the plate that comes with the pad and the new plates that I ended up making for the pad to show you guys what I mean.

The plate that I added on the the inner bottom foot area is made out of plastic that my friend found at his work, flexible and very moldable when you heat it up. It's not very thick but durable (I'm going to look around for plastic that is similar to give you an idea of something you can use). Holes were punched in it and I used plastic ties (sometimes cops use them as handcuff) to hold them on. Since they are plastic they work with the plate to slide. This foot piece actually allows the slide, without it the other plate was useless. I've noticed that the slide comes from the toe area back by the wear on the plate so it's important to include that on the plates (if you make them yourself). The two plates over lap to allow the pad to slide.

Last night I played dek hockey with them on for the first time. It made a huge difference in getting over to the post, and half butterflies. In roller the same is true, but I also found them helpfull for full b-flys and getting to the low post.

I'm pretty sure that no one sells these plates because it has to really fit properly to you pad in order to work. If you have any more questions let me know. I'm working on getting the pics. (All my equipment is at the rink in our locker room and I keep forgetting to bring my digital camera.) I'm really sorry for taking so long.

jbhcky21 what kind of pads are you currently wearing? That way I can give you an idea of how to attach them.

You can also do a search for modifications done by Mont. He's shown some great mods that you can do to help pads work in inline/asphalt use.

Moogy if you check out the inline pads on the Battram site you will see they have plates on the inside toe area like the ones you made. I really like what you have done but if play ice as well then you are kinda stuck. With the one's Scott puts on they are laced in and can be removed easily for ice. Something you might want to do is sew on something so you could try lacing them in. Just an idea.

ps What is dek hockey?
