EXTREME hip/back pain

Oh my God, I have never felt this kind of agony. Apparently while shoveling and also my job caused this. My job is repetitive, every 56 seconds you do your job cycle. Anyhow, I have a strained hip socket/and or muscles and tendons. I think while trying to compensate for my hip, my lower back got sore in the process. I couldn't take it any longer after 2 weeks and I went to the ER this morning. While getting X-Rays I was brought to tears by the pain of getting off the X-Ray bench. I'm no puss, I can take an extreme amount of pain, but I just can't shake this at all. I got some sort of pill and I came home. They said to rest and not do anything, so on the internet sounds about right.

Anyone else have this kind of fun?

What did the X-ray show? Sounds like you need lots of rest and no stenuous work for a while...right?

The X-Ray was normal, no bone-to-bone contact. The Dr. told me what he thought was wrong. Hope it's nothing more than that.

have you tried seeing a chiropractor? I hurt my back one time by doing something extremely simply and agonized with it for two days before I broke down and saw a chiro. I went in and he had me back to nearly normal in 10 minutes. Might be worth checking into, at least for your back problem(s).

LOL Racer! I dunno about the workman's comp thing. I'm not the type to go on that at all. I would rather work in a limited capacity than sit home. If it was the end of the line for me, i'd sell ya the pads but not yet lol. Anyhow, they said to take it easy for 2-3 days and see how it goes. When I got home last night I took a ton of Motrin, which did nothing, slept with a heating pad and put icy=hot on my back to no avail.

I had your kind of fun during the fall semester at school. I was in a roller league as well as playing intermural flag football for my frat. During one of the football games I injured my ankle. Flag football of all things!!!! I went to the E.R. and they told me that it wasn't broken but I had pulled some muscles and tendons off of the bone all over my ankle and foot. I had to be off of it for 2 weeks and than very limited pressure for another 4 weeks. Needless to say but I could not finish my inline season. It waspropable the most painful thing I have ever had to deal with outside of an injury I suffered while playing lacrosse. So I definelt yfeel your pain man

Sorry to hear of your pain. I'd have to second what M13 said about the chiropractor. I've had times where I've had back pain that went right into my hip and down to my knee. A visit or two to my chiropractor had me feeling better and back on the ice. During the hockey season I visit him once a month and only as needed during the summer. It might be worth checking out. All the best in recovering back to normal.

Nothing wrong with workers Comp

You get hurt at work and need to recover? Thats what it is there for! COMPENSATING for lost wages due to work related injury. There is NO shame in getting the benefits you are entitled to! Did you realize that when workers fail to report injuries and use private insurance instead it only puts your health coverage provided by your workplace(if any) at risk? Your employer pays those premiums for the Comp Insurance(unless self funded) and it is required BY LAW that you report work related injuries properly. You are only hurting yourself when you hide the facts.

I have had two bouts with Back related problems. Herniated disc's at S1 and at L3,L4, L5... Was out of work the first time for 6 months and another 3 on light duty. The second injury was much more severe and left me unable to even feel my legs for 10 days. It sucked and scared the hell out of me BUT when the feeling came back and the pain hit I just wanted em to Cut em off if it would stop the pain! lol

When the Doctor says do nothing I doubt he meant that literally. Sitting at that computer is going to be your worst enemy at recovery. Walking is a great tool to help maintain some strength and is generally recommended. MAny times a twist will simply pinch a nerve and get it all inflamed. It can take a while for it to settle back down.

Given a clean x-ray a visit to a chiropractor for an evaluation may be an option. Many times if you have walked with a limp it takes the hips out of location and a simple pain free adjustment helps with that. Side therapy treatment can also help alleviate pain in the lower back/hip. A Chiro should be researched and checked for complaints very carefully. Your local workers comp board may also have a list of approved chiropractors to help you narrow down the choices of GOOD ones.

How does the lower back look? Is there swelling and what feels like a loss of curve? Anti-inflammatory such as orudis KT extra strength(ketoprophen) went a long way further in providing relief than the flexeril they prescribed(Muscle relax.) I took that once and it made the pain worse! The Chiro may decide to start with a hip adjustment and "drop Therapy" to return lower lumbar curve. if He is wanting to jump right into more aggressive therapy you may wish to discuss it with him more if you are still in considerable pain. You Should always leave the office feeling better than you came in(even if temporary) so if you hurt more or feel increased pain during treatment FIND SOMEONE ELSE!

Workman's Compensation will not cover two therapy methods at the same time so you may have a few choices to make. Chiropractic care is almost a must for faster pain relief and a faster return to work BUT that does not address core body strength. Pilate's is a program that is considered by most to be a physical fitness program but Compensation considers it an excepted form of Physical Therapy for many types of back injuries. I have to say UNEQUIVOCALLY that it is the best option available for long term recovery. When I first started the pain returned because my core wasn't strong enough to maintain skeletal positions and adjustments made so I paid the chiropractic out of pocket. Generally about 30 bucks per visit, twice a week with pilates 4 times a week. After two weeks I discontinued the chiropractic care with great results.

Iceing should be no more than 15 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Left on too long the body begins a hypothermic response and draws blood away from the area to conserve heat. Alternating between heat and ice is OK and the heat will encourage more blood flow to the area. Ultra sound and electro massage are also a nice method for reducing pain.

Ergonomics in the workplace is very important. Twisting is the second leading cause of disc and back issues Improper lifting techniques are the leading cause. To see what twisting does to your back take two small toy blocks and set them on the table. Create a space between them of about 1" and tape them together with several strands of tape to simulate the vertebra. Now twist them slowly and note the changes. They will get closer together, compressing the disc material and possible leading to herniation. You MUST learn to pick up your feet and turn the whole body!

Check your local area for a spine specialist and take your x-rays to them. Talk with them about Pilates "balanced Body Method" and see if it is available at a location close enough for you. I swear to god, you will never regret it! I live by the routines now and have a home studio complete with a "reformer" and many other tools used by the program. I have not been to the chiro since and have been pain free for the first time since 1989.

* a small tip: never allow yourself to become distracted where Fork truck traffic is concerned. It REALLY sucks when one backs into you and pins you to a non moving object like a machine or a wall! My thanks to all who wer there for the hard times in my revcovery and for tolerating my pain driven attitudes! Your encoragements were invaluable even if it seemed like I wasnt hearing you at the time....

ouch

Thanks to all who replied! It's embarrassing to say, but I can barely wipe my own ass!!! LOL I have another appointment with my family Dr. today. I am going to go to a chiropractor as well.

MD, I work at General Motors so I know all about workman's comp I see cases of it every day and i can't stand it when I KNOW people take advantage of it. There are messed up jobs for sure, but I cannot %100 say the job caused it. I have been on the same job for over 1 year and never had trouble till I dug those holes for the trees. We do get sick leave pay which is basically the same thing only it's non-work related pay. Either way I would rather NOT miss work and have to deal with red tape up the ass.

Looks like Dusty will have to wait a while for the little one, eh? Just kidding. That bites, but so what you need to do to get better. Last thing you need is to make it worse and can't work. Even with comp, it still sucks. It's funny how the back can work. The slightest thing can cause problems.

Jen threw her back out once just twisting a little to her right to throw out a small piece of paper. She could hardly move and was in a lot of pain for some time.

Hopefully the docs will find something..

I hear ya

I hear you on the abuses since I am UAW also and we have those who see Dr. "SUMMER-OFF" each and every year. Pathetic and a drain on society. It only creates a stigma that ends up attached to even those who are lagit.

The funny part is that most of the time it never is 100% work related. We all have our hobbies and activities. They do contribute. Your description of your job should send red flags up fast as hell. As a Safety Rep I get to see first hand how job station design and our own method of performing the tasks can have a slow debilitating spiral downward. First with a sore back and slight pain that ends up eventually putting you flat on your back. My first injury was caused by constant twisting and was set off by a simple lift of 2.5 pounds. I lived in daily pain for a little over two years(couldnt stay out long enough to fully recover) and then the constant nagging back aches and sporadic failures over the next 10 years. If I had the option to do over I would have made the recovery before returning to work. Were you aware that if you return to work on a light duty basis and are unable to return to full duty within six months that you can be removed from your job or let go? At least on workers comp you generally have a two year window that allows you a return to a "like paying" job at least.

The last injury a bit over two years ago left me off ice for over a year with one doc telling me to NEVER play again. Totally unexceptable to me. You see, even being able to return to work, quality of life is a big issue. I am not here on this planet to provide my company with a profitable worker. I am here to enjoy LIFE and that is not what is found inside the plant. It took a long long time to recover.

Oddz may have been kidding but take it from someone who knows....your decisions now may impact your abilities "in the bedroom". It is no laughing matter. Sex can be a trigger for more back pain! Take care of yourself now and do not worry about work! thats the last thing you should be concerned with.

Pilates solved it all for me once I got aligned and strengthened at the core!
