Injuries
Hey I just want to shout out to all those people who have been injured mid-season, I'm sorry for ya. One month ago I broke my pinky, I haven't yet played in goal after. And to think, I used to laugh at those people. Well anyways, who here has had this happened before? Stories?

I've broken:
All my fingers on my right hand, including my index finger and pinky twice..
..my foot..
..ribs..
..my arm (non-hockey related, although I was skating)..
..and chipped my clavical who-knows-how-many times.
Not to mention also bruised my trachea two times, as well. Ow...
But I've never quit playing for any of them. The foot hurt the most, probably, since I kept playing on it for a month and a half, limping around everywhere I went.. I'm still not sure how I got through that. I finally went to the doctor and they said they couldn't do anything about it since it was already healing (not too big of a break at all).
Well I guess for my arm I did stop playing, but I wasn't a goalie yet (I was like 12 and still a defenseman). I had to stop playing hockey since my arm was in an elbow cast, but I did keep pitching in baseball, and had an allowance for a pinch hitter for my batts.

Broken clavical, fingers, pulled muscles nothing horrible or really note worthy. I got frost bite once (camping in winter) and had parts of my ear cut off. The ear looks normal.

Only serious injury that I played with was a broken hand on my blocker side and since I was the only goalie I had to play with my blocker taped to my hand and without a stick.

I played with a torn LCL and my MCL pulled from the bone. My players would carry me into the rink and to each end between periods. Be amazed what your body will do with enough painkillers. luckily I had no lasting issues from this stupid action.
I have played with tendonitis of the rotator cuff, broken ankle (had a fun time lacing the skate around my air cast), back spasms, numerous wrist sprains, ect.
I have had to sit out a game or two from knockouts, concussions, a broken patella(knee cap), ect.

In training camp for the RHI about 12 years ago I got hit with a puck on my wrist bone. Just one of the strange shots that hit me wierd off of a deflection. Fearing I would not be allowed to finish camp I played with it broken. After camp I continued to play with the injury all the way through the rest of the season.
I had residual pain for about 3 years everytime I caught a hard shot that pulled my wrist back.
That same training camp I got hit with a high shot on my clavicle from Rob Macginnis (Al's brother). I was black and blue from my shoulder down past my left pec muscle for a few weeks. I think Rob's shot was clocked at 115mph on the radar gun. Needless to say... it hurt a lot. But you know... it's camp. You don't want to be showing any reall weekness during camp. You just play through if you can.

I broke my thumb playing football and then went to practice. The hardest part was getting it in the glove because it was swollen and a little tender. Other than that and the regular sprains and bruises, I don't know of anything broken... yet.

yah, I played through two games with my broken pinky, and won, but then I went to the doctors and they gave me a cast. I tried and tried but I couldn't squeeze into my blocker.

Yeah, definitely. I had to take my thumb cast off to get it in my glove and I really couldn't do much of anything as far as grip went. It hurt to catch, but seeing it swell up was definitely funny.

Disclaimer: Guys if you are squimish don't ready this.
I was playing in an ironman tournament and in warm ups before the first game I got hit in the cup. The cup split and one of my two best friends (I call him lucky now I will explain in a moment) took a direct shot. I was the only goalie for our team so I had to play through it. The tournament lasted all day and in between games I was doubled over in pain. When I could finally get all my equipment off I found a terrible sight: Luckey had swelled up to the size of a lemon. Needless to say I went to the hospital. The doctor said that I had the most injured testicle he had ever seen that was still attached to the man's body. Those where his exact words. I call him lucky now because no major blood vessels where broken and I got to keep him. I have had other varoius injuries but this was by far hurt the most.

Wow. Wow, man....... Wow.
I was going to complain about the bruised ribs that I got Sunday night, but wow...
Here's goes anyway... Dove across the crease from left to right with my stick arm outstretched. I landed square on the butt-end of my stick and it got me right under/beside my right pectoral. I made the save with my face.
Today it's as sore as it has been and the pain is just wrapped around my torso. Fortunately we don't have a game until 6/6. It really sucks to cough, sneeze, or even laugh.

Well nothing will beat the "lucky" story but...
I've had both MCLs torn, one playing goal (the other moving a PA)...5 mins left in the game and after the initial severe pain, it didn't hurt too bad, so I finished the game..when I picked up my bag to leave the rink I knew I had a problem, and indeed I was away form playing for 7 weeks and then played the entire following season with a hinged brace on.
I broke my right index finger playing. the problem here was I was also playing in a a house band at a local club. We were also serving as the back-up band for the Budweiser Talent search, basically American idol before American idol. I was the musical director. So I taped my index finger to my middle finger until I actually had to play (I was playing keyboards), and then I taped it back up between sets.
I actually have an old trapper the finger stall basically rotted out of, so I continued to play ball hockey with my fingers taped together in that glove.
Fortunately aside from a bad back which is ongoing, I haven't had anything for awhile now.

Okay... Inventory Time...
Broken ribs - twice
Knee injury (due to crappy pads) twice
Arthritis in hips and knees - always
Numerous throat and thigh injuries
Broken nose - once (I altered my mask to see better and the guy with the hardest shot in our league hit me square in the face. I "goalied up" and played the game with a blood covered jersey!)
Add to all that a digestive disorder which makes me constantly sick before every game (but I play through, thanks to modern western pharmaceuticals!) and the tendency to dehydrate (I play outside in the Arizona heat), and you have a pretty grim picture...
But I am a goalie. It's what I do.

Only injury of note was a few years ago.
OT shootout. I dropped a shade too early, guys dekes to the backhand. I reach backwards and put the paddle down. Stopped the shot somehow, but I strained my MCL in the process. (That what I'm assuming. No insurance = no doctor's diagnosis.) Played a few days later, 'cause it didn't hurt that much, but I couldn't put any lateral pressure on the knee. My first game as a stand-up goalie.
Didn't play for like 6 weeks. Still wear the brace, even though I probably don't have to. Doesn't interefere, so what the heck.
