Sore Knees

Its wierd for some reason whenever i have a couple day break from Roller hockey (which isn't very often) I get a really bad pain just above my knee cap. like theres a knot in there. what should i do. i'm half blaming it on my heaton 10 sr. the leg channel has only one support and it on the out side of my pad. so my knee is near the flour and my toe is tied to the middle of the pad. do you think thats where the pain is coming from?

Ice massage might help. That's what the Dr. recommended to me the last time I tore the meniscus. I make ice packs in styrofoam cups. Makes it easy to handle and just tear the cup away as the ice melts. I've also started using knee pads under the leg pads. It seems to be helping.

Oh, and Dr. said ibuprofen for about a week to reduce the swelling.

You may be putting too much pressure on your knee and thighs... you may want to add knee lifts. Not only will it support your knees better, it will keep you up more when in the b-fly. It helped me with a similar problem with my old pads.

my left knee is so bad right now, i cant drive a stick, because it hurts to push the clutch in and out. Heat and Ice seem to be the magic cure though so you may want to try that.

Mine swells up to the size of a softball on occasion. I didnt do anything to it injury wise, well years ago i tore it up, but nothing hockey wise.

This is not a substitute for real medical advice, but here is what I do...

1. I put ice liquid/gel cream on right after a game or shower. If it is really sore, I may put an ice pack on.

2. I try to take glucosamine regularly throughout a busy playing schedule. I like about 1,500 mg a day. It seems to give my joints some extra cushion.

3. On the long term, you may need to do a little weight training to give strength to the supporting muscle groups. I have decent knees, but it is my elbows that can get sore after a game (if I have landed on my hand funny or what not). For the last ten years, I had a real regular weight training program and it seemed to really help, but this past year, I haven't been hitting the iron and I noticed my elbow joints getting sore after a game. Time for me to go back to the gym.

Yeah, knee pads definately help.

Knee lifts (in my experience) only really help to prevent strain on the ligaments and tendons on the inside of the knee joint.

I wear volleyball knee pads - thick cushioning and flexible - they've helped.

the issue is the placement of your knee. I had the same issue with my old icebreakers and now with my battrams I have no pain. The biggest difference is the landing gear. It keeps you leg at a better placement. if you are anything like me it will get worse and soon become shooting pain down through your knee.

Try getting some landing gear or wear knee pads so as to have your knee sit higer when you go down.

Abot two years ago, I replaced the knee lifts with thicker, softer ones and that reduced my knee pain. It has completely gone away since I started training my quads more.
