Anyone wear slide plates?

I have an old pair of goal pads that I use strictly for inline hockey and I am wondering what I can use to brush or apply on the inside of my pads that hardens to a hard plastic.

I would venture to guess that if you find something that would do that, it would end up crumbling up and slowly falling off of your pads. get yourself a sheet of polyethylene and make your self a set of plates like others have done in this thread.

I decided this year to go with Felt material instead of a plastic material. Ive got to say im quite happy so far. Pretty simple mod as well. If anyone is interested i'll get more specific. If your still looking for a sliding solution give felt a try.

Gokings55- The felt is working really well. Now that I have played about 10 games with them on the felt it self has become even softer which has given me better slide capabilities. I will take some pictures when I have some time off.

NJDEV803- I have only tried them on the type of surface which is beneth the ice at most rinks. Its like a polished pavement, similar to what you might find in residential garage.

I'm going to attempt some plates as well for my R8s. I ordered the plastic today from McMaster-Carr.

I'm thinking that I'll use natelev's design and both velcro and double sided tape. Can anyone suggest the exact velcro and foam tape they use, and where they purchased it.

I'll post pics of my stencils soon and see what you guys think.

First off - May I suggest that using double-sided tape ended up not working out for me. not that it caused problems (it didn't) but to be quite honest it didn't end up doing very much in terms of holding the plates together. I would recommend using just velcro. I will look at the brand name of velcro I used tomorrow when I get into the office, but basically you just want a brand that claims "industrial strength". The velcro has held up very well for me. I ended up attaching the velcro, using a heat gun (hairdryer will work too) to heat up the glue very quickly and let it set for 24hrs. You can find velcro most hardware stores - i bought mine at a marine store that sells boating accessories.

ok so im ordering the new TPS R5's, as well as material for slide plates since i only play roller hockey on sportcourt. i dont feel comfortable punching holes in brand new pads, so i am going with the velcro method. would something like this do the job? FASTENation - VELCRO® Brand Industrial Strength Tapes

also i plan on ordering Polyethylene (UHMW) Adhesive Ready Strip 1/16" Thick, 12" Width from mccaster, would that size be thick enough?

I just received my plastic sheet today (ordered Wed night).

I'm not concerned about the velcro pieces coming undone as I am with the glue that holds them on to the plastic and leather peeling off the pads. I think that I'm gonna lay down some duct tape where I plan on putting on the velcro.

They aren't very good looking but they work very well. I used leafer's & natelevi's methods for attaching the plates using industrial strength velcro, and a heat gun. After they were attached my only concern was the smaller knee gusset piece, I was afraid that the velcro would not hold up but I ran into no problems during my league game last night.

The sliding properties of my pads are amazing now, (better than I anticipated) I was able to shuffle and do small bfly slides on sportcourt. More importantly, the stress on my knees is gone.

nice looking plates man. how did you address your concern about glueing the velcro directly to the pad? that is my main concern as well once my TPS r5's arrive and i start making slide plates for em

btw.. are those R8's or R5's? just noticed those were TPS response pads haha

They are goalie monkey spec R8s.

I made sure to wash/clean the areas on the leather that the adhesive would stick on to. I decided to directly stick them to the leather and not lay down some duck tape first as I originally was planning. I believe they will adhere better this way. I heated the glue with the heat gun before applying directly to the pad, and let them sit 24 hours before use as natelevi recommended.

awesome thanks, thought im still nervous about putting industrial strength glue on my brand new pads.. i may try with duct tape or something first and if that doesnt hold just glue it right on the pad
