control when shooting, but that's about all i can think of...maybe a LITTLE bit of energy absorption as well.

I use it for friction on the puck for shot/pass control. It also helps a tiny bit in reducing the wear on the laminate of the blade.

I've found in ball hockey, it's a hinderance. If it's a new ball, it seems to "stick" more to the blade. Even the tape seems to grip the ball a bit at times. I've went to the no tape for quite some time, and I can't feel the difference shooting or deflecting shots.

I found it would make my stick stick to the surface as well. I started to just put tape on the face of the blade and not go all the way around.

I find tape seems to dampen the shock from shots a bit, especially if you wrap the paddle a bit. Makes it a bit easier for me to direct shots away.

like people mentioned already, it dampens the shot slightly.
I wax the stick tape to prevent it from sticking on the floor.
Makes it more durable too.

I've used tape on my blade for the last, oh, two years or so, I think. But I'm undecided with my new sticks yet.
One thing it does do, as others have said, is dampens the force of the puck when it hits your blade. That is good for rebound control and when you're accepting a pass or stopping the puck behind the net. The tape can also be good for controlling the puck when shooting or stickhandling.
However, I've also found that tape can also somewhat hinder my shooting. If you tape over the heel of your stick it can also make your stick drag a little on the floor. I don't tape the heel.
Right now what I'm doing is having one with tape and one without. Then I try them both for equal time during practices. I'll make my decision in the coming weeks before my next tournament whether I'll do it with these sticks. My old sticks had a huge curve so I put tape on it in order to lessen the power of the puck coming in on my stick. However, since my new sticks have much less curve, I no longer need the tape and, thus far, it has seemingly disabled my shooting, as well. But it could just be the overall change, so I have a little bit more to try out.
I would recommend doing what I've done for practices. Good luck!

It's personal preferance. It just doesn't feel right to me w/out tape on it. But as others have mentioned, tape will stick to some surfaces. The solution? Tape the stick, wax the tape, then take the taped and waxed stick outside to a concrete sidewalk and rub the tape off the bottom of the stick. I suppose just taping the face would work just as well, but this was something I came up with in a hurry during a timeout mid-game (we play on smooth concrete outdoors, but the sidewalks around the rink were abrasive enough to let me expose the ABS on the bottom of the stick).
