It looks to me as though the wear you are experienceing is at least partly caused by this but I am not sure.
Nah, I don't think that's the issue.

I would venture to guess that he recovers from his butterfly by more or less rolling over the front of his skates and this causes the toes to wear on the concrete. He already said that he doesn't use any boot straps or toe ties, maybe if he were to use them, it might force his feet to stay in their proper position and he could get up with the inner sides of his feet instead of the fronts of them.

That would seem like the logical explaination. Like I also said, I'm new to goaltending and learn new things every time I play. I don't have any coaching or classes/camps in San Diego so I've been trying to figure out most of it by myself. Once this cowling issue is resolved, I vow to get up the correct way. This is where some good coaching would help. Basically I'm just a guy who went out and bought all the equipment and started playing (or is it guessing?). But I'm having a blast and love every minute of it. We all had to start somewhere, eh? I love this website and will use it as a learning tool.

My guess is you wont have much luck with the manufacturer replacing them, for free anyway. Especially if the type of concrete surface you played on was a street or something similar. They are probably going to be able to tell pretty quickly upon hands-on inspection that you were playing on a rough surface. If they deny a free replacement and you actually get to talk to someone about it, plead for a compromise. You have nothing to lose at this point (except maybe your toes).

Hopefully they will at least offer a discount replacement since you took the time to ship 'em back. Best of luck man.

I've got a problem also with my cowling wearing through on the inside of the toe and one of them is now cracked. Seems like the plastic they used for the 5000's is not nearly as good as the bauers as far as durability.

Dude go to www.skatesandiego.net and start playing pick up as much as possible, and join a house league. Most importantly STOP PLAYING ON CONCRETE IF YOU WANT YOUR GEAR TO LAST. Joe will set you up, they even have free goalie clinics on Sundays... Good luck, Rep SD!!!

I assume you're familiar with SD. Knowing that I live in SanMarcos and National City is a bit of a jaunt for me. I will go for the Sunday clinic, thanks for the tip. Also I play at Tri Ctiy on Thursday nights and Oceanside in Saturday mornings and 4S Ranch on Sunday mornings, all are the outdoor concrete rinks I spoke of. Also play at Kit Carson in Escondido, which has the sport mats. Other than my skates I tape up as much of what comes in contact with the concrete with color coordinated duct tape. So under the tape, stuff is still new. I even had the idea of getting a pair of steel toed boots, taking the steel toe out and fashioning them onto the skates. Thanks again for the tip!

I just sent mine out last week. I bought them November 18 and already the cowling on one skate was badly cracked from the innerside of the foot all the way down to the bottom around the blade. Last week I sent them to Tour like you did with an authorization number. I sent back the pair before this one because it had a cowling that covered up the front eyelet so I couldn't lace the skate. Maybe Tour is making defective products for this line of skates?

I'll let you know how Tour takes care of my problem. Good luck with yours as well.

rough concrete is just asking for trouble with gear.

With that said I have some older ice goal skates that are sitting in my closet. The blades are pretty much done but the cowling is in good shape. I will take some pics this weekend perhaps (working both jobs rest of week so time is limited).

Would be less then $70 a pop if someone wanted them.....you know like 67.99 a pop

I e-mailed Tour about my delima back on March 4th, I just now heard back from them and here's what they had to say:

"We do have replacement cowlings available for the Tour goalie skates. However, they're the clear blue cowlings that come on the Carbon GX model. The white ones that come on the Redline 5000 skates are not available as replacement parts. That said, the clear blue cowlings don't fit perfectly on the Redline 5000 model skates because of some design differences, but we can modify them a little bit so that they will work.

Also, the Tour goalie skates are not designed or intended to be used on outdoor surfaces. Obviously, if used outdoors, the plastic cowlings are going to wear out much quicker than if used on a Sportcourt surface that they were designed for.

If you want to purchase replacement cowlings, you'll need to send the skates to our warranty department at the address below. The cost for replacement cowlings is $20.00 for the pair. You can send a check with your skates, or use a credit card. Please allow 10-14 days for the skates to be returned to you after we receive them.

Hope this info helps, if you have any questions, please let us know. Thanks!"

Since e-mailing them on the 4th, I've contacted them and sent the skates back to them hoping for a replacement that's covered under the warranty. If it's not covered, I'll gladly pay the twenty bucks and write this off as a lesson learned. I hope this alleviates some questions others may have. I guess I was just naive and figured all goalie skates would be fine on all surfaces, but then again, I am new to it all and learn as I go.

Yesterday I got back the skates in the mail. Tour replaced both white cowlings with the blue ones for free under the 120 day warranty, so send yours back and see if they'll help you. I wrote in my letter that they cracked for no apparent reason and that they were used under normal playing conditions. My son skated with them the same night at his first practice with a new league and they worked fine.

Oddball in case anyone wants/needs...

I actually have three sets of Graf 10.5 cowlings available (still have the ice blade on them, so you'd need to cut them down). They're the 'elf toe' variety.

Not sure if they'd fit the Carbons, but I'll send them off for the cost of shipping as long as I know they are going to a good home

Thanks for the reassurance. How long did Tour take to get them back to you once you sent them out? Did you hear from them or did the skates just show up? I'm just wondering if I should call and get a status update. I just sent them out on the 18th of March, so I suppose it will be a bit longer.

Does your son play at Tri City?

I sent them out on 3/10/08 and got them back repaired on 3/22/08 with no correspondences in between from Tour. They just showed up. You could check package tracking with whatever company you sent them out .

The reason it takes so long is that first you ship them to the main Tour facility. Then 3 days later the skates go to another state for the repair. Then they send them back to you.

Where is Tri city? By the way, we are from Oceanside, NEW YORK, not CALIFORNIA - LOL!
