I play and coach both Ice and roller, I don't see a big diffrence in goaltending between the two. There are subtle diffrences though, In roller hockey you need a deeper crouch to get enough power to move across, also you tend to need you glove/blocker up a bit higher in roller hockey cause with those arena pucks even johnny nobody can have a shot. T pushes are key however I can butterfly on sportcourt. It just takes some extra power and a slightly diffrent technique. The only problem is adjusting to ice afterwards, if you push like you would in roller hockey you'll end up in the boards or nocking your own net off (trust me on that).

Thanks for the replys guys, although I am now a little more hesitant about this whole roller thing though. I am still developing my movement on ice, and need every chance I can get to improve it before next season.. and if theres a chance it'd **** it up, I don't see the logic in it. I'll see what happens about the team i'd be playing for too.. our school is getting major funding cut, from the budget cut they passed a while ago .. and their cutting out alot of the sports.

I wouldn't let that keep you from playing, personally. Coming from your angle, I'd be more afraid of your ice game messing up your roller game. And if the alternative is not playing hockey at all, that can't be good for your ice game.

I think the first version of the sport you play will have a much bigger impact on your movements than the second, because you'll be aware of the differences.

In the meantime, roller is great cross-training. The simple amount of shots you'll see per game makes it a great way to practice. Plus it's hockey and it's fun!

I've found roller has really helped me be more patient and stay on my feet longer. You're much more mobile on your skates than on your knees in roller and dealing the with light puck it means you have to be ready to deal with high shots more regularly. It's really helped me be more patient with my ice game and less prone stay in butterfly and limit my mobility and options. I can also get a very strong push through the crease as well, though my technique is still rather lacking (my fault).

Roller destroys my technique for ice and vice-versa so I try not to mix the 2 seasons.

I do find that in roller it is good practice for puck tracking as the little guy can fly quicker and is harder to track. It also helps develop more strength in my leg pushes as more effort is required to slide across.

Goalies get scored on.

In Roller Hockey goalies get scored on a lot. If you can't recover from letting in a goal, roller hockey may not be the game for you.

Here's what you will get out of it:
1. You'll learn to be more patient, because in roller more so than ice, commiting early will get you lit up

2. Your quads will get huge, because lateral movement (not necessarily sliding) requires a huge amount of effort.

3. You'll come out more and learn your angles better, since roller pucks are deflected much easier.

When you go back to ice it will seem like paradise.

I've played roller hockey for a number of years, then i converted to ice during high school. Now i play both and believe me switching is kinda hard for your game!

On ice i play more of a butterfly-blocking style and in roller i have a more CuJo-Hasek approach to it, reacting and trying to control the rebounds.

In roller hockey, rebounds are the worst part i think. Since the puck is lighter it has a better chance of bouncing off you alot farther. Learning to control your angles better can only help your ice hockey game even more!

T-pushes are your friend. they will be your best damn friend playing roller. It's the best way to maneuver in the crease, other than slight shuffles. I'd only use slight shuffles when i'm doing slight angle adjustments but for major ones don't shuffle or try a stance shuffle, do a t-push. You'll get there quicker but watch your 5 hole!

I've found that my X-Pulse pads are pretty decent for roller hockey but the just absolutely suck for ice! They water log easy but in roller they are light and the leather is very smooth. If the surface you play on hasn't been cleaned in a while (or dusted off) then you will slide pretty decently!

Shooters love to go high on you that's for sure. The puck is easier to flip out of the zone though! hell i get assists much more often in roller than in ice!

For me i just try to have fun with it. If you don't have fun then what's the point of playing right? It keeps you looser out there playing roller if you've just let up 6 goals If you think like Grant Fuhr and just don't let up the GTG or the GWG then you'll be a hero!
