Overdoing it w/ equipment in ball hockey?
I think I'm going overboard now on my equipment in ball hockey. I see other guys with the Canadian Tire CCM Blockade stuff (I had the blocker, don't use it anymore) and I look at myself and think I'm going a bit overboard. My gf thinks I am too but she just hates my spending
I'm not wearing full out pro-spec stuff but I definitely see a difference. BTW I do see some guys wearing their nice Vaughn or Brians pads...
Itech 4600 mask w/ Itech dangler
Itech 4.8 C/A
Koho Revolution Glove (mid 90's Potvin style)
Itech 4.8 pants
RBK 6k blocker
Itech goalie jock
Koho 580 36" (just purchased never used yet) -- formally used itech 4.8 pads
RBK 9k Rebels stick (it was a gift, way too pricey for me to buy)
Keep in mind I would like to try out ice more often going forward but I still enjoy ball hockey. What do other ball hockey goalies wear and who else thinks they go overboard??? I need justification

Where I play i think alot of goaltenders play ice or have played ice and use their old equipment.
Personally I use ******* 992's as my leg pads, Itech HP Pros for pants, Itech 7.8's for glove and blocker and an itech 1400 for helmet. I use all my ice equipment besides for the legs pads and a collar.
Balls can sting so I would rather be over dressed than under dressed

exactally. I play ball and ice.. I use my vorteks for ice and my brians demons for ball hockey. People always ask me if I'm crazy for wearing those pads out there... but nope, just putting some old gear to use! I wear my mission motion gloves, my sportmask helmet, my prism pants...and my older bauer S3 or something C/A
THEN.. there's the people who all they do is play ball hockey so they do go buy the NHL pro vaughn v3's and the rbk gear... whatever floats their boat... personally, with the shots I face, I wouldn't be caught dead in the canadian tire/walmart street hockey gear! lol

Here is my slightly overkill Dek gear:
Mission Helium Elite pads
NBH Vapor XXX C/A (sold my Battram)
Mage II
Battram XLP
Vaughn 3500 blocker
TPS 104 pants
NBH Vapor XXX stick (2 actually)
I think I have you beat by a little, to each his own I guess. I've considered buying Viper Evolution pads and putting slide plates on them, but I couldn't rationalize spending $900 for dek pads...

Balls do sting!
I only play ball here in England at junior level (18 & under) but train with the seniors at times. I have just had my second throat guard shattered by slap shots so yes even in ball you do need the best that your money will stretch to.

A lot of the guys I see actually just stuff some padding into a sweater and wear the street gear and that's it. They tell me it's cuz they can't move when wearing the full ice hockey gear, and I'm now considering stripping down too. I don't mind pain...in fact I think todays goalies are becoming a little too chicken-****

I'm another goalie putting my old goalie gear to use.
Here's the list:
Eddy tusk Jr helmet...I think this thing is like 12 years old now
Koho Int Chest protector- Also pretty old, 2 yrs older than the helmet I think
Eddy goalie pants- again 5 yrs +
Brian's beast int trapper- 2yrs old, absolutely love this trapper
Brian's blocker jr- 3 maybe 4 yrs old now
Crappy ass Sherwood Jr pads- 2 yrs old, I don't like these very much, but I was in a crunch and needed pads fast after a team asked to play winter ball hockey. I have to wear knee pads b/c of the week knee protection. Straps are all intact but the some of the stitching is coming apart. If I find a sweet deal on ebay, I'll update them right away, otherwise I'm saving up for a custom pair.
Overboard?! I think not...not sure about you but I'm not a friend of bruises. They make my legs look less hot . The only thing I'd get rid of is the dangler, but that's just b/c I'm a dangler hater.

I wear the same gear for both ice and ball except for my pads. I have two different sets of pads. A set of TPS Summits for Ice and then a set of 1st generation Missions with pad covers for ball hockey.
A big thing I have done this season which has helped my game is to only play one type of hockey at a time. Playing both ball and ice was not working out too well for me.

Well I feel I've paid my dues playing ball hockey. not that many years ago I was wearing 24" rubber cooper street pads, a sweat shirt for a c/a, a hockey glove for a blocker and a first baseman's mit for a trapper. I had a cooper street hockey mask with ultra thin wires.
Gradualy I upgraded peice by peice with an eye towards playing on ice. Having played on ice for a few seasons I am seriously considering sticking with ball hockey for reasons too complicated to go into now, but I definately have kick-ass ball hockey gear now!
Mask: custom sportmask
pads: Vaughn Velocity 1 with added paw knee blocks and thighboards.
trapper: Sherwood c10 with pelican pocket
blocker: I just got an rbk 6k..it feels pretty ball hockey-ish though
c/a: ******* Matrix with ferland arms (somtimes I use the matrix arms but they are just so massive)
Pants: Hespeller lite players pants which I rotated the thigh pad slightly for more goalie-required coverage.
To me it is about comfort, protection, and enjoying the equipment you have, regardless of the surface you play on.
As for other goalies not using as good of gear...it's about choices.

FRAM, I find that interesting. Last season I found playing both ball hockey and ice kept me sharp. Then again, intially I was spliting games with another goalie and sometimes played less than 1 game a week. (Until half way into the season she was unceremoniously kicked of the team, but that's another story ).

Well the ball hockey does keep my arm reflexes sharp for Ice hockey, Ice hockey slows down my foot work for Ball hockey.
I am/was a competitive ball hockey goalie for over a decade before learning ice and still consider myself a ball hockey goalie first. I enjoy ball hockey more than ice at this point in time.

My ball hockey (dek) league requires CSA approved gear, so no Blockade stuff (what I used to wear, too).
My gear:
34" Mission Helium Elite Leg Pads (Black/White)
Senior (Regular) Mission Helium Elite Catcher (Black/White)
Senior (Regular) Mission Helium Elite Blocker (Black/White)
White Hackva 2608 Mask (going to pick up a dangler tomorrow)
Medium RBK 6k Chest Protector
Black RBK 6k Stick
Old CCM Player Pants (don't remember the model)
I love my gear so far, although the chest protector will always feel a little big (long arms). I'm still tweaking how I do the toe ties on the pads, too.

I believe those pads are 12" wide my friend, you might want to check on that before you get busted...

No such thing as overdoing it with your equipment when it comes to ball hockey, just as long as you feel protected enough and fully mobile. I have played ball hockey over the past decade. Over the years, I have come across a ton of "street hockey goalies" with bruised up knees and sore ribs all from using Canadian Tire road warrior gear. Then again, I've seen some ball hockey goalies in the OBHA dressed up in $2k worth in gear only to suck the big one game-in and game-out.
Making the saves is all that really counts.
Here's my ball hockey set: (I consider it the perfect medium)
RBK 5K 34"
DS-992 Catch
DS-992 Block
4.8 Itech CA
4.8 Itech Pants
Sportmask Ricochet
Players Jock
*Using the Sportmask for Ice too
