Mission Skates

I like to play forward in roller hockey and I just recently bought a pair of Mission Proto VR skates. I like them but They will not break in. My feet swell ever time I put these skates on. Mostly on the outer ridge of my foot. My question is; is this normal for missions? I've only skated on these skates about 7 times, but all the ice skates I have worn haven't ever given me this much discomfort for this period of time. I know nothing about these skates so any help from you roller hockey guys would be appreciated.

I never had a problem with either of the pair of mission skates that I wore as a player but that doesn't mean that they will fit your foot. Have you had them baked? It really helps the mission skates and I do believe that these are bakable skates.

To be honest, I don't wear missions anymore as I've found a pair of Nike (who would have guessed) boots that I really like and I pair them with either mission vibe or rockey hockey quickchange chassis, which I have been heavily leaning towards of late.

Jer,

I ahve not had this problem but my teams captain has. He has to take 3+ week off to get his feet back to normal. He had his problems with Bauer skates but according to his Dr it is part your foot part the skate. If the skate is bakeable try it it may solve all the problems. if it is not I would seek some professional help in fitting the skate. His Dr's suggeestion was that use the same skates for ice and roller. (his Ice skates were not a problem).

Moral of the story, not all skates fit all feet. If the pain fells abnormal seek out some help.

Yes the skates can be baked, I just have heard that they wont last long after baking them. I've been told that they will continue to break down after they have been baked. It is still an option. Any opinions on that? I Just perfer the normal way of wearing them until they are broken in. I just didn't know if it was common for mission skates to take their time breaking in. Also, could it be possible that since the skate is supposed to be baked, and I haven't, could that be the problem?

Jer,

For my pair of Missions I didn't need to bake them or anything. In my experience Missions tend to be one of the more comfotable skates out there. My last inline team used mostly Missions and there were no problems for any of them. The general break in time was around 2 weeks. One of our guys did have a slight problem at first due to a slight size miscalculation but he used the wet sock method for a while and he said that it got pretty good after a while

I've had this same problem with my Missions as well.

Your Proto VR's have a stiffness rating of 5.5, this is middle of the road as far as stiffness goes with the Mission line.

I've only used the VSI proto line, and they have a stiffness rating of 7.5, so your skates should break in a little faster than mine did.

What I did to solve the "pain" issue was to leave the laces across the top of the foot a little loose, then when you get to the ankle area you'll have to crank them down. You'll have to experiment with how loose and how tight you make the laces, but this does work.

I'm not sure if the VR's come with waxed laces or not, but this really helps keep the loose area "loose", and the tight area....well, tight. My VSI's have the heavy duty waxed laces on them (Mission has the market on the waxed laces! ) they're a pain in the butt when the skates are brand new, but well worth it for the painless skating.

If you are using regular laces and try this tightening method, the slack from the top of the foot will find it's way to the tightend area around the ankle and then you're always retightening, and there will be a little pain still.

After a while of doing this, you'll notice that you'll start getting the area on top of the foot a little tighter, untill the skate is completly broke in.

I hope this helps.

I never had a problem with my Mission Proto V skates (5.5 stiffness). The Proto V is still the most comfortable skate I've ever had, ice or roller. But my Proto VSi skates (7.5) hurt like beotch for a long time. Werner's suggestion about lacing looser across the top of the foot helped a lot. There's one pair of lacing holes by the ankle that are set back further than the others. I find it more cofortable to skip these holes when lacing up the skates.

Good point G-man, I actually did this also on my old 95 VSI's, and on my new ones as well. I had to switch back to the "factory" lacing due to a torn ligament on the front side of my ankle. But that seemed to make a HUGE difference in comfort.......skipping the holes that is.

I've had my Missions for about two years and worn them about 30 times and they still haven't broken in. It has gotten so bad that I wear hiking boots when I play goal in street. I don't even know what to tell you.

Strange.

The Proto VRs I bought to ref and skate out with broke in fine and have been very comfortable.

Maybe I just got weird feet.
