A thread I put together on modding a c/a for arms that were too long, loose elbow floaters, and replacing the straps with elastic.

After realizing how broke I am I decided to follow some good advice and picked up some camping foam velcro and make some extra padding for my 4.8... so I can save up and get a nice decent C/A down the road.

This is what I did.. I'm going to test it tonight. Yes I realize it looks ghetto as hell -but frankly I really dont care :P

My ghetto padding - wrapped in duct tape - extra thick sternum protection and belly padding...

I sewed on some velcro...

And voila.

I can follow up tomorrow to see how it works.

padding a thin catch glove

Anyone know how I could beef up the palm/fingers of my Sr Heaton Helite Z catch?

Every shot I take into the top of the palm stings....if it's more work than worthwhile, I'll spring for a new catch...but I'm curious to see if you guys have any suggestions

Your best option would be to spring for a new catch :P

You could, i think, add some foam to the outside of the palm but that would look gross. A catchers mitt glove maybe? One of the inner gloves?

Agreed....there's really no easy way to get extra padding into the inside of all the thin areas of my glove...so, new glove it is!! aww what a shame...

well so far so good with my ghetto duct tape job This will hopefully hold up for me until I can save up to get something better.

Long live duct tape!

I was considering getting an inner baseball glove that has built in palm padding. there's a selection of them here:

http://www.sportsterminal.com/store/...ARTMENT_ID=286

I also have a Heaton Helite Z Sr. Catch. 2005 model. I used to get some stingers now and then. I sort of remolded the pocket though. When it wasn't in use, I just had my glove pressed up against something to push down on the center of the T, this made the pocket deeper and a lot wider, gave my glove a much more rounded overall shape. Now everything I catch hits the pocket or just roles around inside the palm until it finds its way to the pocket. No more pop outs. No bounces off the palm. And no stingers (I think that pushing my pocket out wider changed the angle of the palm a little, focusing everything on the pocket).

And it makes me look like I have an amazing glove

The only mods I've made is to replace/tighten stretched elastics, and to add a little extra coverage on the top edge of the arm/tricep area. That part was only because I have a bad habit of 'crab-arming' (like a box lacrosse goalie), and that sometimes exposes the outside of my arms a little.

I DO use those knee board pads to making knee lifts for my pads though, they really are great pieces of foam.

The number of pucks I've taken of the tricept is amazing...man that hurts! I used this c/a when I played Junior B, it seemed adequate then so I must be getting older and slower. Since I started playing again I've gone up against some big guns and have been bruised too many times with this thing. It could be that it's too small and there is less distance between it and my chest to absorb impact. Either way the extra padding will suffice until my V2 arrives.

I'm still working on the knee lifts, the foam is the perfect thickness I just need to talk my wife into making the covers .

Minor mods

Hey here are pics of the foam pad-lifters. You'll see they aren't anything spectacular but they do the job. I'd recomend to anyone considring doing this to use a wider piece of foam. I didn't take the curve into consideration when buying the foam and found for the first while when down and my skate was close to the ice it would kinda bind against the outside of the foam blocks when recovering. A wider piece would keep the skate in its own new channel and you wouldn't have any binding issues. You can see how the problem has corrected itself buy compressing the foam along the inside edge.
I also threw in a pic of my calf/knee wings. I removed the Demon design from the knee and the "Brian's" logo from the calf for easier/quicker moves when down.

Adding vinyl to V1 landing gear

**Landing gear and knee wing are used interchangeably in this post but refer to same part of pad**

Hi I'm new to the board, the whole reason I stumbled across it was trying to fix the nylon landing gear on my V1 pads.

The nylon became very 'fuzzy' over time and trapped the snow making sliding very difficult. I tried a variety of sprays, wax, and even a razor to shave off the fuzz to no avail. I read a couple of posts where people had glued vinyl or leather to the knee, although somewhat dubious to the durability of this method it was the easiest to try.
My parents had a couple of huge rolls of vinyl in their basement so I decided to put it to good use. First I traced the outside of the landing gear and cut out the vinyl, then I trimmed it so it would fit directly on the landing gear with no overlap.

I then used a fabric glue being careful to spread it right to the edges of the vinyl. I clamped the vinyl to the knee sandwiching it between some wood pieces for 24 hours.

This lasted almost a full game but near the end of the third I looked like I had bat wings as the vinyl was flapping off the knees.
I decided a better way would be to sew pockets that I could slip over the knee wing and attach to the pad. I took the original cutouts and re-traced them larger adding enough excess material for stitching and wrapping around the width. On one side (the piece that would be against the knee stacks) I added a couple of extra inches so I could tie into the knee stacks to secure the new piece. I folded the extra inches on the inside piece over and stiched it so it would look nicer and so that the tie in was double thickness. The pocket looked like this.

After trying it on the pad the fit was really nice, I had a large eyelet set from some previous repairs. (This can be bought at Wal-mart, Zellers, etc.. for a couple of bucks)
While the new sleeve was on the pads I marked where the holes should go to tie into the existing knee stacks. Using an industrial hole punch I made the holes and installed the eyelets.

Here's what it looked like tied in.

I've had them on the ice and it works great, any changes would probably be for appearances such as scalloping the edge to follow the inner knee roll of the pad which you can see above.

Ok. I read this thread, and found one thread relating to my request. I just bought a new Mckenney chest and the arms are too long. If these were lace in arms that would be no problem, asi could just make more holes and be done, but these are sewn in. Any ideas or anyone that actually shortened the length of there arms, without sacrificing mobility (i dont want to unstitch anything on this unit)?
