The "How to" (mods and repairs) Thread
(Last edited August 16th PM)
Hello everyone, credit for this thread goes to Keeps33.
This thread is dedicated to "How to" make your own mods to your equipment and "How to" make repairs to your equipment.
Please make any contributions, small or big, and the moderators on here will try to keep this thread/section clean.
It will start off slow, but will pick up as members come up with mods and repairs that they have done in the past and present. (Added) It is only the first day and this thread is working out very smoothly. Good simple/clean "How to's" have been contributed thus far.
If you have any suggestions or ideas for improving this thread, send me a PM and I will mention it on this first post so that this thread remains clean and to the point. Or you can post your request here and then when it gets addressed, you can delete your post to keep this thread uncluttered.
Pictures are definitely preferred, as they will speak a thousand plus words in this type of a setting.
Thank you,
Raymond
PS. I will edit this first post to update any ideas and changes to this thread.

well, I guess I'll start off. My ******* Matrix C/A was having some problems staying together. The elastic snapped, so I duct taped it. After that little problem, I noticed that the heart/chest/whatever you wanna call it plate kept slipping in different spots. Also, the shoulder wings were a bit much for me to handle. First, the chest mod.
What I did was poke a hole in each side of the chest plate, and one in the bottom of each shoulder wing so they lined up. I ran a piece of skate lace through and tied it together in a circle, and then knotted it. It really keeps the shoulder plate from slipping under and above in different areas.
I was also having some trouble looking to the sides because the wings were so big, so I tied them down a bit. I poked a hole in the top of each wing, and a hole in the shoulder piece under it. I then ran a piece of lace through each hole and tied a knot in each end. Here is the end result.

I added some extra protection on my Reactor 3 pads, like outside calf and knee padding and extra knee lifts. I used camping foam cut to shape and covered it with duct tape. I was able to find colored duct tape to match the red and blue on my pads. From ten feet away you can't even tell the pieces are not stock. The duct tape was available in about 6 different colors, so you can match most pads colors.

Quick & Dirty Tip:
Buy a roll of kite string. Use that and a needle to repair any rips in your gear. Kite string has a high tensile strength and is quite durable.

knee lifts and vinyl slide pads
I made up my own knee lifts using inexpensive foam from a foam store's clear out bin ($1.00 for 2 foot by 2 foot HD 80 piece), nylon fabric to cover the foam from a fbrice store, vinyl from a fabric store to create the lace in tabs, and then used fishing twine and a curved upholstery needle to sew the tabs in.
Worked like a charm.
I have tried upholstery thread but found it to be lacking.
other good sources of foam are :
- camping mats made from closed cell foam so it does not absorb water.
- knee pads for gardening are typically made from very high density foam. Walmart had flat ones for $4 that I used for knee pads.
My first generation Vaughn Velocities had nylon on the landing pad. I cut out some vinyl and used Fabri-Tac glue from Michael's craft to glue the vinyl on to the nylon.
Works great.

Matrix C/A Mods and Itech 4.8 pants Mod
This is my first post here, I just wana say how impressed and thankful I am with this Board. All the posts have helped me play as well as choosing my gear. Ive been a guest for too long so I figured I might was well join in the fun.
A few months ago I Purchased a Matrix C/A. I bought it because of all the good reference and reviews it received. I also liked its net coverage. If you join the GEW Board you also get a pretty good discount.
A Pro Level C/A?
A stock model right out of the box, Definitely NOT!
Chest Pad
I tried it out on an Open Hockey Night and I kept getting stingers on my abs from shots on the blue line. I inspected the armor foam squares and noticed significant gaps between each squares where the sewing stiches run. I know that you need gaps so the c/a would be flexible but the you can fit the width of a puck between them. So if a shot hits that gap, there is nothing to protect you but the soft cushiony foam thats behind the chest. Although I had no problems with the belly pad, it was very thin and not protective at all.
Shoulder Floaters
I didnt get any stingers or bruises from hard shots but I felt enough pressure to feel the hard blunt impact of the shot. Its def more than enough to feel where the rebound is going.
THE MODS
The Matrix is a large C/A, my mods are strickly for protection! I would honestly feel embarassed and ashamed if people saw me putting on a large c/a with additional blocking mods.
Type of Foam: I used Gym Floor Tile foam. I bought package of them from Walmart..but im sure any Sporting Goods store would have them. They are fairly light and flexible. Make sure you use Industrial strength Flexible Fabric Glue. Dont get the ones that dry into a cement. This mod cost me $20 bucks
Shoulder Mod
I simply traced the shape of the floaters, and cut away. At first they felt stiff, but after you wear them a few times they mold n bend to your shoulders. And I never feel any uncomfortable blunt impacts from any slap shots or one timers.
Chest Mod
At first i just put a whole block of foam on the chest pad, but I found it to be too stiff and uncomfortable. So i cut them up horizontaly so they can bend n flex. I also added foam behind the chest plate and the belly flap. Once Again I never feel any stingers or uncomfortable blunt impacts.

Now my Matrix C/A is officially a tank!
I didnt want to make a new thread but I also beefed up the front of my Itech 4.8 pants.
