The 580 goalie has a wide butterfly because he's doing a no-no: he's sitting. If you sit down in your butterfly, or even crouch down a little, your butterfly widens. Straighten your back/waist and your butterfly shortens. You should always try to be as straight as possible so you can react side to side. Sitting down makes it hard to stretch the legs to either side, and will take more energy to thrust upwards if it's a shoulder shot, whereas it takes less energy to let yourself sit down lower if it's a chest/waist shot. Don't be fooled by wide butterflies.

I'll spare you all from my worn down Vaughn Visions... but I will get pics of my Brian's catcher and blocker combo.... I need some pads that would match Penguins yellow and black.

Too many people here are astounded at wide butterflies, especially when they're done absolutely incorrectly. It's a basic mechanic of goaltending that I see a ton of, but once corrected, can mean an entire difference in how a goaltender plays down low.

I totally agree with you Elite. The thing is, I beleive it is shown that way in some goalie school. I helped little goalies, age 5,6,7,8... and I saw last year 3 goalies doing the BF that way. I tried to show to them to straighten their back as they would slide faster, and will be easier to get up, to stop high shots. Their parents came to me after the practice saying :"we payed $2000 of goalie school last year and they have learned the BF that way, so don't show them the other way".. Even if I prove the parents they are wrong (im my mind it is wrong to do the BF by sitting) I stoped showing things to the little guys. Sad but true.

Or the kids are not able to do it correctly, and parents beleive it is the good way. They are a lot of kids in goalie schools these days and teachers don't have the time to fix things kids don't do correctly.

LOL

Hey space,
you should ask the parents how much they spent on equipment. then after they tell you ask them if their kid let in a goal. after they tell you that he has let in a bushel, then tell them they bought the wrong equipment and that they have to pay another $2000 and get better "shut out hockey" equipment.

i love parents who don't know anything, not even research their kids position on the internet or even do a basic search. everyone knows you have to keep your body erect to protect the top shelf........other wise I would butterfly slide to a belly flop and twist *sarcasm* ala Tommy Salo to make a save.

you tried with good intentions...........whatever

Wow.. I'm astounded by that. I've actually never felt a negative reaction towards my teaching, or anything that I was teaching, but that was never for $2k, either. I can sympathize with you about the parents; there are just too many pround parents who think they know how to goaltend. I guess I am in this boat, not as a parent, but as a goaltender, since there has been times in the past where I would intentionally not do something in a goalie camp (mainly because he was teaching an 80s style), and while I still say that the style is just absurd, it's helped in some odd situations, particularly as an inline goaltender now.

But anyway, I just find that horrible that parents don't listen to you. Perhaps even worse is that there is someone out there teaching wrong! ..and getting paid $2k for it!

Anyway, off my soapbox, I go..
