This is how its described on the smith site.

A new inner and outer ridge system in the boot and shin offer multiple advantages while remaining within the twelve-inch limit. The inner ridges provide stability and reduce friction for enhanced butterfly slides. They are also effective for snagging pucks that make it past the face of the pad. The outer ridges help in sealing up the pad against the post. They can also be helpful deflecting pucks that graze the outside of the pad.

if you really dont wanna give up the knee rolls, the SP1000's might be what you are looking for, they are very flexible in the knee area and super lightweight....maybe you can get a set with 4000 graphics?!

to you other smith users, how is the flexibility in the knee area of an SP2000 compared to a 1000, i love the graphic of the SP2000 but dont wanna comprimise the flexibility of my 1000's

Pete told me that the 1000 and the 2000 are the same flex knee rolls just look different. Just the same behind the leather so it looks different on the outside..

Listen to what the man says! You can also ask for the pads to be more flexible than normal if you like them that way.

Give Pete a call. Based on what you tell him, he will decide which pad will fit your style best.
thanks for the feedback guys, I'll give Pete a call. Since I'm based in Hong Kong, I wanted to do some research and get some feedback from current users first before I call.

Smith Pads

Chakal - actually my fellow Wolverine wears the 5000 graphic with Maize and blue on a white pad... He was in those for the last handful of games I've been able to watch.... It is an all white pad with a hint of U of M's colors..

Speaking about pads, check this out biys and girls...... NEXT Thursday will be 6 weeks from order date....... My pads are almost complete as of today..... ONCE again, PETE THE MAN has come through. Less than a week and I will be in brand new SMITHS..... That brings tears of happiness to my eyes!!!!!!

I decided on orange and white....

Tim emailed me back in early December telling me that Pete was trying to get him into a pair of Smiths. I'm glad to see he took my recommendation for the Smiths to heart.

The differences are pretty obvious if you read the specs, although still subtle:

1000...knee rolls, tapered toe and thigh
2000...no knee roll, tapered toe and thigh
3000...flat face, tapered toe, square thigh, no graphics, all nylon straps, econo model
4000...same as 2000, different graphic, extendable thigh rise.
5000...flat face, square toe and thigh, optional thigh extension, optional outside post flap

As for which one to recommend...depends on your game.
What are the benefits and disadvantages totapered or squared thighs and toes?
Also, I thought that all Smith pads came with all nylon straps?
Thanks

My favorite pads ever! The all white looks so sick, but I would probably get so freaked out when they get dirty. Have you had any problems with the white getting yellow or nasty? This started happening with my RBK 6 Catcher.
